Oh and I forgot! I did use an air chisel... Just with a blunt tip so it would not cut through the metal.

Mine is an industrial model and vibrates like an old Yugo with a bent rim!!

With the tar cold and this thing vibrating like mad, the pieces break up real easy!!

I just use either a putty knife and hammer, or a trim removal bit for an air chisel (basically, putty knife with a .401 shank) along with a LITTLE bit of heat from a heat gun, enough to make it come up easily but not so much that it turns to goo. The residue cleans off with a knotted wire wheel in an angle grinder. (Face protection needed, even knotted ones shed wires)

Dry ice and liquid nitrogen sound nice (ESPECIALLY liquid nitrogen, for German cars with a barrel of goop on the underside) but those are solutions for people who can plan when they get to work on their car. I only remove the tar when I need to do body repair/modification, I feel that the very slight weight loss is more than offset by the added noise and heat and cold from not having it.

we used to just wait for a really cold day and use ice ice.
