engine idle
I just bought my first 7 she is an 82 FB12A. The idle sounds a little rough, and the idle ranges from 500 rpm to 1100 rpm. Also when the motor is cold she likes to stall when I try to move from a stop, unless the choke is pulled out about half way till the motor warms up. I'm thinking it a carb or loose throttle issue.

well the first step is to go thru the tune up procedure. there is a page in the factory shop manual that just runs down the adjustments, manual is at Foxed.ca
so step one is to get it fully warmed up. step 2 is to locate the idle mixture screw, and adjust it until it runs the best (should be about 2.5 turns out +/-1 turn). if you need to smog the car, adjust it to where it runs the best and then go an 1/8th turn richer.
there is an idle speed screw, but you shouldn't have to touch it, ever.
step 3 is to check the timing.
if the car stumbles when the engine isn't warmed up, it may be normal, the choke stays on until a certain temp. however, the mixture screw effects the choke, so getting it right might help. another thing i would look at is the thermostat, you want the thing to warm up quickly

Usually you'll go from dead cold to normal operating temp within 5 minutes or less. Depends a lot on outside temperature & how long since it was shut off.
When everything's in order, the choke will actually hold in the out or half-out position until the engine hits op temp, then let itself in.
