There's a constant very minor hum/grind when the clutch is not engaged, and it's just sitting in neutral or in gear. It seems to get louder as the RPMs get higher.

So here's the video of driving in my friend's cobra 'stang. It was kinda scary, since he's not the best at driving yet, so it's the last time driving with him, but none-the-less, it is a Cobra.

the issue is not with your transmission but with a faulty throwout bearing. the trans must be dropped to replace the throwout bearing, which rides o n the input shaft's collar. i can post pics if you woudl like.

Hahahahahaha! That's what me and all my non-wanting-to-showoff-constantly (like the kid with Cobra) say.

I just replaced the throwout/release bearing though. Brand spanking new.

They also got it for a good deal because it was a V6, then a guy did some body modifications, and then he dropped a Cobra motor in it, so they were able to get it for about $6000. So it has its fair share of problems. My buddies dad drove it one day, and when the kid finally left, he said that thing was a ticking time-bomb. He said there were all sorts of weird sounds going on. I guess the guy that did the engine swap didn't do the best job at it.

Just finshed mine. And I'm also thinking throw out bearing too. Mabel u didn't get it on there right. Or better yet ur fork came off the spring. take ur clutch slave off and see if the fork is on there correctly. Hard to type on a phone. Ill explain it better later

Yeah, I know what you mean. I believe it's on the spring correctly, at least it feels like it is. And It seems that randomly when the grinding sound is happening, that occasionally it sounds like something is being thrown around. It's hard to explain, but it's like the grinding sound is happening, then randomly a louder, clunk-clunk-clunk happens, then it's back to the regular humming/grinding sound.

^^now that sounds like the internal bearings are shot..evidence of being run without the proper amount or type of lubricant in the trans.

uh-oh. I guess it looks like I will have to go pick up a transmission from a local guy who sells butt-loads of RX7 stuff. I'll give him a call. Would all 81-85 12a transmissions work? or just the 81-83? I found the ad on craigslist for this guy.

Sounds like he might be my new friend.

its fine until the radio isn't loud enough to cover the noise, then you need to fix it

I got no radio, haha. It isn't that loud at all, just a small hum. I'll see if I can grab a transmission this weekend, and here are some pictures of where the car was sitting before I got her. Kinda sad.

Nice find. I'm not much for wide bodies but that one looks great.

I'd drive it for awhile before worrying too much about that drive train sound, might go away or at least not get any worse.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Busy day today, got a used transmission from a guy about 45 minutes away that's loaded with RX7 parts. He said that he when he got in the business of selling RX parts, he didn't know that 98% of customers would be Puerto Ricans. HAHA. He was a nice guy, I got the transmission for $150 and he knows it runs good for a fact. I also got a 13B rotor housing and rotor for 10 bucks!!! My friend got the other 1/2 of the engine for 10 bucks then too! We are currently cleaning them up and prepping them for display. Pictures sometime tomorrow maybe after I might go check out a '79 that's been sitting in a garage for 10 years and only has 30 some thousand miles one it. Oh, and I also got the RX inspected, so it's road legal.
