Cold Start White Smoke
Cold Start White Smoke
I am trying to resurrect an 84 13B that I got out of salvage.
I finally got the vacuum leaks solved, had the fuel injectors cleaned and tested to spec.
She fires right up now. No smoke at cold start in the morning, but after about a minute she starts pumping out white smoke.
Once I start to drive her (I've had her on the highway at 70mph and stop and go on the street), no smoke that I can see.
What is the cause and how do I resolve the white smoke.

white smoke after flooding
My 88 GXL started to have flooding issues at about 65k. Once it finally started there was so much white smoke it covered the street!
It also happened at the dealership; their entire maintenance area was filled with smoke.
The only thing I can come up with is that the 90% anti-freeze in the sub-zero starting system was being sprayed into the intake manifold while pumping the accelerator pedal to get it to start.
Try plugging the feed line from the sub-zero system and see if it still makes white smoke when starting?

Depending on how cold it is where you are, it could just be condensation. It is not unusual for rotaries to smoke a lot on cold mornings from condensation build up in the engine, exhaust and crankcase. Sometimes it can take a few minutes to clear, and usually doesn't build up immediately upon startup because the exhaust needs to get hot enough for the condensation to turn to steam.
The alternative is coolant seal leak. One way to test for that definitively is to test the gasses from the coolant using a head gasket leak detection kit.
