so who has removed this targa band? i have one on my car that is kinda not looking too good.. missing the mazda side emblems and overall ugly. i want to remove it before i paint the car. is there any suprizes under it like holes and things ill need to fill?
Yes there will be some mounting holes underneath there also may be a little surface rust as well from water getting under the band if you are careful taking it off it is a very sellable item, even if you break a piece or 2 I know where there are a couple of spare pieces.
As to if someone made a true targa Rx7 that would be petty enterprizes back in 79-80 time frame there were ads for it and write ups in the old rotary rocket magazine. that would be a true TARGA 7
Your car looks nice bo, I like your wheels and the disks poking through. I think I perfer the body molding to contrast the body color but that's a personal thing. She looks good! Is the interior black or red?

i had those same stainless steel panels.. was that a factory option.. i took them off, my door was rusting behind them. i liked them, then sometimes i didnt. your car looks great tho
Is that a 110MM X 8 bolt pattern? Looks like you just used every other mounting hole.
I've got some 3 piece panasport racing rims that are done the same way they have both the standard 12a pattern then the alternate holes are the GSL-SE pattern i would have prefered them with only one set of holes but when you are swapping suspension and rear end components makes rim selection really easy
does anyone have any of the side emblems laying around for the targa strip? ive decided to keep mine on but im missing one and the other is kinda shoddy. i think they just pop into it with some pins into some small holes. if i cant find any to replace them its coming off
Hi all,
Here in Europe we didn't receive any RX-7's with the Targa band option, but I have created my own Targa version. worked on this conversion (including complete restoration) for seven years, from 2007 until 2014. these first pictures were made shortly after finishing the car, when I got interviewed for an article in a classic car magazine one of the many headaches: fabricating some rubber seals around the fiberglass inlay locking mechanisms of a Nissan 100NX used. the window now slides between the newly fabricated support on the door a very creative nephew of mine, fabricated these stickers for me, based on the decals of your targaband models. very large, but not too obvious his father is very handy with 1:43 models so he converted my right-hand drive Ebbro model to left hand drive, added the rear spoiler, changed windhield wipers, indicators, rear lenses, mirrors, rims etc, not to mention the miniature decals! to make it exactly like mine
That targa top conversion looks to be VERY well done! The whole car looks great! When the top is not bolted in place, do you notice and loss in body rigidity? When going over bumps or train tracks, does the interior creaking or do you notice any body flex?
the top surely adds to the rigidity. although I have added a lot of structural components to the underside of the car, you really can feel it flex when passing diagonal humps when the roof is open. speedbumps, where both wheels are lifted at the same time, are no problem. But when the wheels from one axle are not moving in sync, you can feel some torsion. no worrying noises from the interior though.
when the top is in place, the car feels exactly like it did before the conversion.

thank you. since I have owned my first RX-7 at age 24, I have always dreamed about this conversion.
and it was very cool to be able to realize this dream at a later stage in life
