Am I crazy for selling my 1980 anniversary edition rx-7?
OK, serious question here. I’ve posted the car before on here as it was something my dad heavily modified it over the years. and I now own the car after him passing. I don’t have the time to work on restoring it or giving it the attention that it means to get back to it former glory and my son only has interest in LS swapping it and turning it into a race car.
The car is a 1980 Mazda Rx7 anniversary edition where my dad swapped out the 12 a motor with a 13 B balanced and blue printed rotary with matched 5 speed manual transmission and clutch and two barrel carburetors with racing header and pipes. He upgraded the interior with a custom dash panel and Ricardo seats with speakers in the headrest.
for the most part, the car runs great just needs love and care like having the carburetors properly jetted and tuned and some minor bodywork to fix the fiberglass that’s cracked over the years. one of the seats needs reupholstered, but I found the Ricardo fabric online for 300 bucks
i’ve had people tell me that the 13 B balanced and blueprinted engine is worth 7 to 10,000 by itself and the transmission is worth another 2 to 3000 by itself before even considering the shell or any of the other parts that are functional. I listed the car for $7000 and I have three people coming over tomorrow to look at it and another person from Kentucky that hat’s contacted me interested and now I am questioning whether this was a good idea.
looking for some feedback on what’s best to do with this car and I don’t want to keep it because I’m not going to restore it and I don’t particularly love driving it as I am not a small person
I don’t really want to park the car out for the value of the engine transmission and I don’t want to sell it to somebody is going to park the car out either so honestly looking for somebody that’s going to love and appreciate this car like my father and I did during its Prime
I agree with the sentiment of wanting it to be enjoyed by an enthusiast. Just don't leave to much money on the table unless the offer you a ride every now and again. Everyone here will be honest as to a sales price for the car. It does seem a bit low with all of the mods. I am not very versed in sales prices so....
You only have time for the things that you make the time for. There are exceptions to the rule but is still mostly true. This is a thought to keep it as well.
A LS swap could be a good father son bonding thing. However, in the wrong hands, at car like that is very dangerous, so decide carefully.
Also, I don't think anyone's father would want their kids to feel burdened by what was left behind. It can be tough to let go but if this car sits and rusts into the garage floor, your father or nobody else would be happy either. Whatever your decision... best wishes.
Hard to put a value on something you only have a description and a few pictures of, to go on. 7K is a little low for a clean, well kept, running car in good condition. The modifications your father did, look very unique and pretty well done. Regardless of how well he built it, they are however "His" modifications, done to his taste and can put a twist on its value. Anytime you substantially alter the style of a car, you run into those who will like it and those who don't. Purist's will see it as a value reducer while like minded, will think it adds value. The anniversary edition the car began as, is lone gone and would cost too much to try and recreate again.
Not sure its helpful listing to those who say its worth more as parts. It very well might be, but would you really consider investing the time and effort to tear apart what your dad built? I think your dad would rather see it go to someone who will appreciate it and keep it alive and on the road. It might be worth a little more than 7K, but you already listed it for that. You could take it off the market and re-list it later for more, but people remember those kinds of things, especially the ones who are genuinely interested.
