aluminum purchase

I want to pick up some 2" thick aluminum for the purpose of fabbing up some spacers. I found this site that sells all kind of metal and was just wondering if anyone has any experience in getting materials this way? I have been to all my local steel supply houses and no one seemed to be able to help me with what I needed.

http://www.metalsdepot.com/index.phtml?aident=

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Their prices seem reasonable. I've used local supply houses before but if that's not an option for you then they look pretty good. It just sucks paying shipping on it. Shouldn't be too bad for you getting the aluminum, but I looked into having some stainless plate shipped before and it was redonkulous!!

just out of curiosity what was the problem with the local supply houses....did they not want to deal with walk-ins?? If there are any mom-and-pop machine shops around you they might get your materials for a very small mark-up....

The only material the locals wanted to sell me was steel diamond plate. Yeah its cheap, but heavy as hell and not suited to what I am trying to do.

I am picking up some rx3 camber plates in March and I want to make some spacers to go on top (for now) as a temp solution for my front ride height

Thats how did my RX-3s 2" alumnim spacer and extended strut tube to raise the ride height and get more negative camber. Heres an idea. If you still have the stock 1" triangular shim, juat cut a piece of galvanized pipe, depwnding on how high u want tobe, qnd place it netween camber plate and stock shim. be sure to use strong grade bolt.

u mean the shim that comes with the camber plate kit???

no I see what you mean, but the this might be where the glc and the rx3 differ. I do not have any stock shims

Im in Minneapolis, I can think of 5 places off the top of my head where I can walk in and either order or buy outright what your looking for within 5 miles.

One would think brooklyn would be heads above what minneapolis has for raw material suppliers. I think your just asking the wrong folks.

Hit up your local speed shops, ask them where they get their stuff.

Good idea Greg...you are probably right I am asking the wrong people. A lot of people out in Minneapolis probably build their own stuff. I think in NY we just order out of a catalog and call it a day...lol. Pre-fabbed world out here.

Buy the shims for a FB from mazdatrix since its a hit and miss. Its easy to cut the hole in the middle without proper tools and equipment. Lol on that plate, imho its a ripp off

Yeah if someone told a week ago that it would cost upwards of $100 for a 12"x12" piece of aluminum, I would have laughed and said its crazy, but after a week of searching calling and asking...it seems that that is what these materials go for. Apparently steel houses normally do not stock aluminum plate and I would have to order alot more than I need just to make it worth THEIR while and it would cost a small fortune on my end.
Were you suggesting the shims as an alternative to the plate??? or as a help to make the hole in the middle? I figured a holesaw on my drillpress would get me close. And just use the original strut top to mark my mounting holes and drill them out.
