will rear seats from a 2nd gen fit a 1st gen rx7?

 

I'm pretty sure that they won't, at least not without some modification. The rear seats (at least mine) were held in place by big posts that went through the floor held on by bolts. There were brackets on the sides that raked the hell out of the metal and started rust but that nobody had ever bothered to screw down.

I ended up trading mine for the bins. Despite the rarity, they really aren't all that great. I'll give you the number of the guy I traded them to if you're looking to buy one. They weren't used in the US because they're not all that safe (or comfortable.) If I had my daughter in the car I put her in the front seat despite the rear ones.

The back of the second gen RX7 isn't enough like the back of the first gen for me to think it would be an easy (or cosmetically appealing) match.

 

I would say that US models came with the rear seats, even though they were useless and pointless. I had an 83 RX7 Brown with tan interior car was always an Illinois car Bought sold and kept in Illinois... Still floating around the Joliet area but the 12a is long gone swapped for a 302 v-8 swap, and a t-56 5 spees with an 8.8 rear diff. Last I saw it. I think USDM got the rear seats but they were not a heavy featured option.

I think the rear seats were an US option. I have an 84 GS from South Dakota that has them.

 

Sorry, all North American cars were two seaters from the factory, any rear seat versions you find are aftermarket retroinstalled rear seats.

 

I'm reviving this thread because I resently got rear seats for my 85 and I need to see some pics of the mounting brackets and the panels for them if you are willing to sell ill buy for a fair price thanks any other info on them would be great thanks

 

Are SA rear seats just foam stuck to the floor?

I'm wondering because the more I look at FB rear seats they seem to bolt into the car. Where as the rear seats in my '79 were just foam padding on the floor. At least thats what I think because only the bottom was padded. There was no back to them. Or lap belt or place to afix a lapbelt (that I saw)

I don't have mine any more...I traded them to a guy for the bins. They were OEM seats that folded, not the crappy after market ones.

From what I remember, they had two metal posts, one on each side, that bolted into holes that already existed on the floor. Then, there were two metal brackets that were essentially shaped like "L"'s. The one side went on the seat and the other attached to a spot kind of where the wheel well began, if I remember. I don't think there were holes pre-drilled for those. The jerk-offs who originally installed mine at the Mazda place back in 85 didn't bother to drill the holes and properly mount them so the brackets just kept rubbing against the metal as the seats wiggled. When I took the seats out I found a bunch of rust where the brackets had scrapped the paint off!

 

Mazda never offered any OEM seats in the states. The only oem rear seats for 1st gens were overseas, either JDM or euro spec, (not real sure where, just not here) and some have been brought in, I'm sure.

Like Mr. Chung says, the only seats ever sold in the states were aftermarket, and were not offered by Mazda.

I bought a set in '82 from a accessory catalog. (Can't quit remember which one, maybe Rx-7 Club of America). They were nicely done and were near OEM quality.
They had armrest on each side and the back folded down nearly flat with the rear package area, much more than just foam in the bottom of the bins. They saved me from having to sell my car when my family grew. Kept them till we got a second car then took them out and sold them.

 

Pics would be nice I'm fairly shure these are original mazda seats the guy I got them from had a passenger seat as well so I picked that up to just because it was the same color nd stuff as my interior so I figured why not.then I or to looking at it and it was a little defrent the lever to fold it down also had a back part that someone in the back could push down with there foot to unless the aftermarket company was very detailed there mazda spec seats but that still dosnt solve my problem of the brackets I think I can fa somthing up but I want to do it with as meny original parts as I can
