$275 for a fan clutch?!

Well my "new" GSL-SE is leaking coolant and has a clunk/rattle from the front passenger side. Probably idler arm.

Been pricing these items and found that a fan clutch for these cars costs $275. WTF?!

Yeah, they are expensive buggers. What I would do is go to the junkyard, find a ford taurus, get the electric fan "2 speed if you can find one and just use high" And the $20 temp sensor and relay system.

After it's all said and done you got a $40 fix that works better than factory stuff.

Well, let's see. We're talking about a 25+ year old car that doesn't have a huge following. Ok, WE think there's a huge following, but in reality our numbers aren't that big...nowhere near what you'll see for old Mustangs or Corvettes...or even for the MGB for that matter. So, parts will be hard to find, and expensive when you do find them.

That being said, maybe an electric fan conversion would be a good choice? I've read that people do a Ford Taurus electric fan conversion al the time.

Or post up a WTB in the classifieds. Fan clutches take a long time before they fail.
What is bad with yours? Or are you just making a statement about the cost?

I'm just making a statement about the ridiculous cost; and hoping most other parts aren't similarly priced. The water pump and idler arm are fairly inexpensive...

You'll find a huge variance. Some parts are quite reasonable...others (like the fan clutch - lol) not so much.

The fan clutch doesn't cost anything if you don't have to replace it. If you do, like Doc says, there are plenty of used parts available, I paid about $15 for a good used fan clutch for my GSL awhile back and I actually found a new one that I stole for about the same price on ebay - that's the one I've got on my DD now (I must have four or five good ones out in the shed).

But if you expect to walk into Mazda or Autozone and walk out with a new part for Chevy prices, you are probably in the wrong business. Come to think of it, what does a fan clutch cost for a 2006 Chevy? More than $275, I bet.

I don't think any 2006 models require a fan clutch, do they? Hasn't everything gone electric?

I just sold a fan clutch to a guy with a GSL-SE needing one. I don't have any more that would fit the GSL-SE. The mounting bolt pattern is different for the '84 -'85 models.

this is for a porshe but it will be the same. another member posted this list or another a few months back to do the same thing.

you can read this link also http://www.nichols.nu/tip482.htm it goes into the different types of oil the toyota has for this and also at the bottom of the page there is a company that rebuilds them and such what.

Some of the prices are rediculious. GSL's are alot cheaper than the SE's tho. Fuel injectors for those cost $400 each from Mazda. AFM is anouther $420.
