hi, im begining to think about that kind of swap, i own a blown 90 base n/a and a 81 Gsl. what i wanted to do at the begining was to drop a carbed 13b in the Gsl, but something came across what i was planning.
i wanted to keed the engine and tranny from my 90' as a base for this project, and to sell the car with no motors nor tranny.
but theres a guy parting out his 87 T2 to do a V8 conversion. i told him i'd trade my 90' for his engine, trany, wirering, driveshaft, rad,hks turbotimer, clutch/flywheel, lsd and stuff. he was feeling ok with that deal. now i want to know what stuff will i have to ask him from his t2 ? coils and stater, what else ? oil cooler ? will the lsd fits on my 81 rearend ?
thanks for the reply, keep this threat alive 1!!!

id like to know how much it would cost just to have someone to put a single turbo 13b in my 83...im talking all parts and labor
There's 16 pages to this thread..... I suggest you read at least the first couple. That should get you an idea, because it really depends. You could spend $500-$15000, though it really depends on what you've got already, what you want to do specifically, and who you got doing it.

id agree with Fatboy7, im not even done with my project and its at $10000 already. Not to mention there are a number of configuration you could go with. So start writting every thing down people are telling you and figure out how much money you want to spend and the cars main purpose.

I spent a little under 8300 and I got deals everywhere. I'd say 10k will have you a nice turbo FB that you can drive everyday and beat anything you race

you should be able to do a t2 swap for less than 5000 heres simple math engine 1500, exhuast 500, fuel system 500, engine manangement 1000, ods and ends 500. thats 4000 and you could have a nice set up. or you could do like every one else that does this type of swap (Including my self) and up grade every thing else with the car using the excuse that it had to be done to suport the power. I will be about 8000 when done. some how it adds up I got the engine then I needed boost controller, upgraded injectors,3in ss exhuast, front mount intercooler, electric fans, braided lines, new gauges, new shocks/springs, ect, ect, ect. O well its fun. the swap has been done for as little ast 2500 in theory it could be done for less than that if you were able to keep it in stock t2 form

When performing the swap woulden't you have too change the fuel pump too an internal one and also change the rear end.

no, and no. you do not have to change the rear end. the stock one is good in to the low 200 hp mark in early 1st gens in later ones the rear end is much stronger and a lot of people are doing fine with quite a bit more hp with the latter. inline pumps are the preferred ones look at the early post in this thread.

Ok, I have a swap into a SA22C in progress. It will be completed over the winter. I am using a 13BT from a Series 5 Turbo II. I fitted the 12a front cover today, but couldnt get the water pump housing to fit when using the 12a cover. Should I just use the 12a pump, or modify something to make it fit?

Regards,
Frode, Norway

I just ground off about 1/8-1/4" of the TII one, its just that one bolt support.... its alluminum so its much lighter than the 12A one, and took about 3 min to grind off. There's still plenty of material for the bolt too.

Funny thought that I never saw this mentioned on a to-do list when swapping in the new engine.

i used a 12a front cover on my 13bt swap and didnt have to grind anything off. if youve got a pic of what your reffering to id like to see it. the only thing i found was a 12 metering pump only has 2 outlets and the 13bt block has 4, so if you can get a gslse cover it could save you some headache.

I would like to see a pic of that also. and also I did not have to grind anything off. you do need the 4 outlet pump. I have heard sometimes the 4 outlet pumps dont work on 12a covers. but it worked on one I tried. I still went with the gslse cover for ease of the oil return line from the turbo.

I wish I had a digital camera so that I could show you what I had to do.

Basically it seems the 12A water pump either has one less bolt holding it to the pump housing, or its in a different location.

On the front cover there is an indentation near where the pump overlaps it. On the 12A cover the indentation isn't as large as the TII one, where the TII one accomidates the extra bolt support. That means the TII water pump and housing will not fit on the same engine as the 12A front cover without a very minor grinding.

This is on a S5 engine. Maybe the S4 ones are different.

I'm premixing and therefore didn't want to hunt down the -SE front cover.

My 13BT is also from a S5, and I got the exact same problem as mr fatboy. I will be premixing too, so OMP is not a problem.
Will try to get a few pictures tomorrow.

I've been driving the hell out of the car ever since I got it running at the beginning of July. Been a blast so far, the best part is giving people rides though. I love the look people get on their faces when I do a good 0-100mph run Mschafe came down today and took some video of the car. Can't wait till he uploads them so I can see it in action other than in the drivers seat. There should be a couple/few of them of me doing a full power run from inside the car up to ~100mph getting onto the freeway and he did a walk around vid while the car was idleing also.
