(REFERECNE) Rear gearing questions - ID numbers & ring & pinion information.
Ok, I have searched through several posts on rear gearing and rear chunk and really cant find the answer.
I have pulled two rear chunks sitting here. Both are big bearing but one is suppose to be GSL-SE and one GSL. Well they both have the same numbers stamped onto the ring gear and was wanting to know did mazda have these numbered and if so is there a list somewhere?
Thanks

yep, its in the parts catalog, foxed.ca...
if they are both the same number that means you have a 3.9 gsl-se rear, they only did the 4.09 for a while, most should be 3.9

Well not sure where you are but here in the states the GSL had the common 3.90 and the gsl-se was the 4.08 or also called 4.10.
both my rear chunks are the same stamped numbers, both have 53 teeth on the ring so I will assume that both of these are the GSL-SE rear chunk as I pulled one out of my gslse and the other I thought all this time was the 3.90 gsl rear chunk.
Still would like to see the stamped numbers some where on a list.
Thanks

Ok, Doc. Want to be sure on this.
85 model GSL-SE -- 3.90 or 4.076?
84 model GSL-SE -- 3.90 or 4.076?
All 12a 79-85 had 3.90
I ask this because everything I ever knew was the SE's had the so called 4:10 rear.
And now I am learning that is not correct so wanting to be sure.
85 model GSL-SE -- 3.90 or 4.076?

For 85 SE models that is correct.
For 84 SE models = 4.076
All 12A = 3.90
I have covered this before in threads?

But your wording in my thread is confusing! "For 85 SE models that is correct". Not knowing if you were agreeing with me or them. It would have been easier to say, For 85 SE models = 4.076 or 3.90 so I am to assume you mean 3.90 but still cant figure why mazda did the se's different in the only two years it was made.
O'well, guess I should have searched more than an hour.
Thanks

Don't know how your confused their Chad?
Post # 13 of the thread that you stated did nothing for you? :-)
Yup. Bolt 'n go. The housings are the same on all the S3 disc rears. The axles are also the same except for the GSL-SE axles being a bit longer (so the your GSL axles will work with the GSL-SE LSD and/or ring and pinion.
Count the teeth on the SE ring and pinion. I have seen some different ratios floating around depending on when the SE was made. If the SE stuff is out to where you can count the teeth, see what you are working with before you do the swap. If I remember correctly, the late SEs also had the 3.91 rear. So, make sure you are getting what you expect.
Just checked the microfiche. The GSL-SE ratios are:
- up to Nov. 84 production = 4.076
- Dec. '84 and later = 3.909
As stated in post # 4 :-) Of this thread
As stated the Se's in 85 or a split there of were all 3.90 gearing.
Then you specifically asked in post # 5 asking about the SE model only-
?????? I know my eye sight is funky right now as I have been welding but are you saying the gsl-se has the 3.90 rear gear, Not the 4.076 gear ratio?

For 85 models that is correct.
What did it not help in?
It answered your original question!
Sorry but I couldn't make it any clearer that I was referring to the SE models. :-)

Well I really wanted to know if there was a list somewhere that stated the stamped numbers that Mazda used so I could ID the ratio.
"Well they both have the same numbers stamped onto the ring gear and was wanting to know did mazda have these numbered and if so is there a list somewhere"?
I did see the following in post 13 that still did not answer my first question but was good info to find.
"Just checked the microfiche. The GSL-SE ratios are:
- up to Nov. 84 production = 4.076
- Dec. '84 and later = 3.909 "
So since this post I have found a site that does have some of the Stamped Numbers Posted that will help me identify what I need to know.
And with the 53 ring teeth I might have the following:
Rear ratios
Pinion gear teeth Ring Gear teeth Ratio Notes
13 53 4.077 Early 84 GSL-SE
Thanks for all the help.
