(ELECTRICAL) starter wiring help needed

Forgot to label the wires going to my starter when I pulled the engine..... Now I'm confused.
I have three wires to choose from:
positive wire from battery
negative wire from battery
Little green/yellow wire

I, unfortunately forgot which wires go where... or if i even use all three. Below is a picture with numbers of possible places to connect them. Please help if you can.
Starter and wiring is from my 83GSL.

Positive goes to the solenoid. Make sure you hook it up to the empty terminal... not the one with the strap going to the starter motor.

Little green/yellow wire goes to the second terminal on the solenoid. It goes to a fusible link and runs certain components that come on when the key is in the start position.

Ground goes anywhere on the engine/gearbox. But, it is better to have it close to the starter so you could use one the starter attaching bolts.

The one with the strap you leave alone, just tighten it down

The one (stud) on the right is the (the big wire) + one...

The black/yellow 10awg is the starter solenoid wire..

The big thick ground goes to back of one the bolts that secures the starter

TRUST me, I just done this 5 days ago... The big boot that goes over the (+) large guage wire denotes the hot, battery (+)

Are you talking bout the wire with the spade connector or the ring terminal?

Ok..... just got back from wiring it according to REVHEAD's instructions.
Green/Yellow wire went to the one with the strap.. (#1)
Big Positive terminal from battery with big plastic covering went to (#2)
Big ground went to (#3)

I am certain I did have a wire connected to the one w/a strap to the starter, just unsure weither it was the + battery connection or the yellow/green wire.

Both have a ring connection, fit over the bolt, and then are secured.

Is this correct?

#1 - Should just have the strap going to the starter motor, and nothing else

#2 - Positive from battery

#3 - Where I put my ground

#4 - Possibility for ground as well.

#5(Not Shown) - Where the little wire goes. Its a slide on terminal BETWEEN the two terminals with nuts.

Absolutely correct. When the key is turned the contacts inside the solenoid close and power is fed from the big positive cable to the starter via the strap and also the hot start assist via the small wire.

And don't listen to RotarMotarDriver, you'll get confused.

Thanks man, but thats the way it is on my 83 GSL...Now maybe mines wrong? I only have three wires as well, on hit, one ground and one with the slide terminal im talking about in between. As far as I know, its all right...But hey, I could be wrong. On the 84 GS there was a 4th wire though, and I never did figure out what it did...It went to the terminal with the strap on it for some reason...

Just messin with ya mate.

I'm sure your's is perfectly right. The 4th wire that connects to the strap goes to the hot start assist motor. Most people get rid of that piece of **** so that wire isn't even really needed.

Ok cool, the starter is working =].
Tried firing her up last night after reconnecting everything except the fan and shroud....
No go= [ Going back today to check for spark, unflood if needed, throw in some ATF/MMO, maybe push start if it needs it. Motor turns, sounds like it's trying pretty hard to start too =]

Soooooo close.....

WHOOOOOHOOOOOO
It runs.... It runs... It runs....
/me does a big dance.

Got it started this morning, thanks to a nice bottle of carb cleaner =].
God I missed the sound of a running rotary, and it's only been 1.5 weeks.
So friggin happy, still have to swap out the water pump(the current one leaks) and throw on the fan.... but that's it... Heeheheeee... so happy.

I love this forum, thanks everyone.
