Hello all I am brand new to these forums and was looking at getting into a rx7. I found one for sale locally and went and looked at it. Below is the craigslist posting for the car.

So the car is a project at this point, just needs a rebuild on the engine, and the owner told me it needs a new clutch.


So what do you guys think? Would this be a good car to start out with? Or should I look for something better?

If your okay with rebuilding the engine, its not a bad snag for a shell.

FYI, A rebuild can run your 1000 - 3000 depending on how the motor died and how you replace the parts.

700 is diffently a good price, even with a bad engine! i see them around here in tx for about that price or more with bad engines, and there not even in that good of condition and without the mods

It has a lot of good mods.

As some one stated before 1,000 to 3,000 grand for the rebuild.

As the buyer do you feel its a good deal?

 

I personally wouldn't want to pay that for a car that I would have to do an entire rebuild on. For the price of the car and the rebuild you could get a decent turbo II.

 

Thanks everybody for your input, for this project I would feel somewhat comfortable rebuilding the engine, as long as I had a good guide to follow. Also the owner of the car told me the engine blew when he started the car in cold weather and then drove in immediately, he said he went 10 feet and the car died.

He says the car has no compression so he was thinking bad apex seals? Does this sound like a feasible problem or something much worse?

Also I was looking around the forums and saw some rebuild kits that were priced pretty cheap such as this thread:

So around $500 at the cheapest?

Please let me know if that seems unreasonable, but as far as i am concerned it seems like a good deal and the mods on it make it worth it.

 

There are a few problems I see because I don't know you. I'll tell you what they are and you can make a decision.

The car has a nice body and the mods do help the appeal but the engine rebuild is a big problem. If you haven't done a few already, on a rotary engine, I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you have a lot of money laying around. I'm not saying you can't do it, just that you should do some research and see if you think the car is still worth it after you know what a rebuild costs/entails. I think you will find that you would be better off spending half of what a rebuild costs in addition to your other money and getting a running car.

As far as a rebuild goes, you need to plan on spending an additional 1000usd at the low end. It will more than likely be higher depending on what parts you can reuse from your engine. It will definitely be more if you have to ship it and have someone else charge labor. You could technically get the parts for a "rebuild" for 500usd but that would be the bare minimum and would be cutting corners in my book.

Lastly, all you know is you need a rebuild. You'll find out what the problem actually is when you get into the engine but everyone says that the apex seals are bad when they don't know what the problem is. Do a compression test and that will tell you if its an apex seal or not.

Hello all well I decided to buy this car and got it delivered to my home today

So now the fun part begins from what it looks like right now before I tear into the engine I have to probably replace the flywheel and rebuild the clutch.

Still pretty excited about the project and will probably spend a lot of time reading on these forums. Wish me luck
