help! i have an event in a week and need to do some serious tuning to be ready for it.

i had a laptop for ms but it died so i picked up another one. sony vaio model pcg-fxa63. it was pretty haggard so my it friend wiped it out and reinstalled the os. windows xp. and now i cant get it to connect to the ms. i go to connect, test com port. and all 99 ports fail. th it guy said it could be the drivers but i dont think thats it. under the device manager it says the com ports and usb controllers are working correctly. i dont think its the ms cause the other computer found it and controlled ms fine. i dont know what to do and am feeling very desperate. when i plug something into the laptop it says new hardware found, even if the other end of the cable isnt hooked to anything. i click on install and the install freezes.

are there any computer gurus here that can help solve my problem?

just use plain ol serial? Serial should be supported just by installed winxp.

Make sure you have megatune set to look at a certain comm port ie comm1. And make sure the comm port you are using is mapped to that same comm port. This will most likely be your problem. Other than you not having the USB-RS232 adaptor drivers installed assuming you are using one.
