rebuild questions in NJ

Now that im finding out how much mileage is really on my car i now have to worry about a rebuild....

so i was wondering if there was anyone reliable and trustworthy that could rebuild an S4 n/a engine around the northern NJ area.
and a price for how much it would cost.

I dont quite need it now but im probably not too far off from one.
the engine probably wouldnt be ported(gas is expensive enough as it is) only rebuilt.

thank you for your time, i am looking forward to any recomendations so i can have a feeling of were to go and a price.

thanks,

dave

I got my engine rebuilt by Kharen in CT. Near our area i don't trust anyone. I've been at New Mothers and they almost bleeded me to death. Acosta is ok but i've heard a lot of negative feedbacks about his shop. I just recently picked up my car from JPR in south jersey. He is far but he is by far the only mech that i trust right now. You can Kharen in the forums and Jim through JPRimports.com. Good luck and keep us posted.

so how much did you guys pay? im trying to figure out a price range.

im not quite mechanicaly inclined enought to be able to pull my engine out myself(mostly because i wouldnt be able to remember where all the hoses and wiring go, and because i have no way to get it out, no lift or anything) and i know RotaryRessurection charges about 2k for that and im going to add another grand just incase i need to replace anything else....grand total would be around 3k...

is that about right for everyone or am i wrong?

If you want a basic rebuild for your N/A you are not going to spend that much. I paid 1500 for mine and Kharen did it. I pulled the engine out myself and took it to him. 3k is more than enough but you could save a few if you pull the engine yourself. It really is not that hard, you can get the haynes manual which is pretty straight forward and tells you how to do it for about $20. Search around and keep us posted

Nah if you got a good running motor dont even worry about it until the thing gives you clear signs that its ready to give up on you! However start saving up $$$ lil by lil so when the time comes you be ready!

thats the thing, im not even sure about that....the dash says 86k but carfax says 186k(of course you think roll back) but it doesnt feel like it, the engine still has 110 on front and 100 on back(piston compression tester)
by the way what difference is it what plug you test compression in leading or trailing? will the reading even be different?)

the car doesnt exsessively smoke, im not loosing coolant or oil, the fumes dont smell like burning coolant, i friggen passed inspection!!
but sometimes i still get this weird feeling like something is going to go wrong..... in winter months is the engine supposed to start funny? becaue ever since its been getting cold it seems to give me just a tad bit of trouble starting but after that its fine.
it will do this like chugging till it gets to 3k then it will go down to 2500 then it will warm up like normal then it will be perfect....what does that mean?
ive been looking up tons of info but i cant find anything that matches my case.

oh and lately (this is like once every week or so) it will do this audible noise similar to when you leave your lights on but at a different soud rate.. i checked all my sensors, they all work and are in parrameter. what is that? its killing me!! and freaking me out!!

i love my car and i never beat on it, im going nuts!!!!! please help me!!!!

I think you are panicking... My original n/a gave me 210k and i used to beat on it all the time... May be you should let the car warm up before you take off until the temp gauge gets to the middle or 1/4 up. When you start panicking it will seem as if everything is going wrong with the car so calm down a little. I think your car is ok but maybe someone in here could give you better advice than me on this matter.

when it comes down to N/A I have the most experience here. If and when your ready I might be able to do it. I say might just because I'm not taking any work. But just incase I can't help. I would suggest Ihor. He is a local guy like me and dedicated to his work.

Why don't you send a PM to Kahren, he is very knowledgeable. He was the one that rebuilt the engine. go to members list and look for Kahren and drop him a line. There is really not a lot of good people that can work with rotaries, and if search for many of the shops around here most of them are crooks or phonies. I have traveled the distance to get my car done the right way. G/L

Thanks Ito. I'm pretty backed up as well but might be able to fit in some more in a month or two.

that should be the accelerated warm up?
when you turn the car on it revs up to about 3 grand, idles down to 2500 then to normal. its a process to help warm teh engine faster
(if you do not want it to go thru this process you can always blip the throttle a little bit and it will idle back down)

I can't really help with the problems, but just wanted to give a +1 for Jim at JPR. He has done everything from electrical work on my '79 to rebuild/port on my '89, and quite a few things in between. He does great work for cheap. Give him a call: (856) 227-1808
