New Redmond-based RX7 owner - some questions about tuning

Hello all, I'm new to this forum so please be gentle.

I recently purchased a 1994 RX7 R2, Red with 40k original miles, from Scorpio on this board. He still has his website up detailing the car: http://www.micromanx.com/goble/rx7/index.html

Based on some archived recommendations on the board, I took the car to Jerry's Little Car Shop in Kent for an oil change as I didn't know how long it had been and wanted to establish a clean maintenance schedule moving forward. Jerry is great, and I want to give him props for giving the car a quality once over. It turns out that the car is running rather rich on startup, no doubt due to the XS Engineering ECU thats on the car. The car was idling high (~1.2k) and he turned it down -- due to the richness @ start this produces a bit of black smoke. Nothing horrible, but something I'd like to resolve. I am certainly happy that it is running rich rather than lean though

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no way to reprogram this ECU without having a new chip burned. Am I correct in thinking that I'll need to purchase a full engine management solution to take advantage of a dyno tune (such as the upcoming Steve Kan tune sessions)? I really like the idea of having the car tuned in relation to all the performance upgrades that have been performed. If I need a new engine management solution, which one do you recommend and where can I find the best price on it?

Other than that, I just wanted to say hi. I'll try and make it out to a local event the next chance I get.

Some pics

Thanks,

Colin

Nice looking car! Power FC by Apexi, I like them so much I put one in my 82 turbo fb. I believe you can pick up a brand new one for $690 plus shipping via ebay or jappartspecialist or something. If your apprehensive about installing one, just shoot me a pm and I can help you out.

Very clean looking car. PFC is the way to go with a FD. For a standalone it cannot get any simpler. You are just in time for the Steve Kan tuning session as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep an eye out for a PowerFC for sale on the forum.

Jap part specialties. I think that PFC's are still on back order. People have had pretty good luck with them (2 week wait). Chris is right, 690+shipping. People are selling their used PFC's for 700+. Might as well buy a new one.
