FB Rear Big Brake Kit

Just wanted to drop a line to let everyone know the Rear BB kit is now listed in the catalog. Kit is similar to the front kit in that the customer supplies the turbo II rotors and calipers to complete the swap.

sweet ... now finish up that rack and pinion

sorry just noted something on the site ... I see that you always have se/non-se lengths ... I thought they were all the same length? Like the axles, so if I have a GSL the rear wouldn't work? if not why not? Thanks

I plan to do a flow chart type thing that maps all this out but here is the skinny:

1) The Disk brake housings are all the same lenght. 81-85 GSL and GSL-SE.
2) The axles themselves are a different lenght from the bearing to the wheel mounting surface. GSL-SE being longer.
3) Our kit mounts differently depending on the axles you run.
4) A parking brake pull cable support bracket for the non-se axles will be manufactured within a week. This will be the only part that is different on the kits (i.e...GSL or GSL-SE


Questions:

Q: Can I use the kit for a non big bearing axle housing?
A: Yes, you will however need to have your axles re-drilled to the 5 lug pattern. Our replacement axles come only in big spline.

Q: Can I purchase SE lenght axles for my non-SE car?
A: Yes, The only change you will see is a backspace change in how your wheels mount. In other words, you would also need wheels with a GSL-SE offset.

I know it took a while

I have some involvement with the 2007 Champ Car build. It has been a nightmare for me since about November. Things are looking up now so, more stuff out SOON.

Sweet, now I'm just waiting for the rack and pinion
One question about this kit, I'm running second gen Convertable wheels with the 40mm offset. I have a GSL rear, but would I be better off getting the SE length axles? I know I will need a 25mm (give of take) spacer for those wheels to fit on the front, what about the back?

How timely, I was just getting ready to put together the front kit I have and was wondering what to do with the rear since I already have rotors and calipers left over from a TII project.

I have a GSL rear and was going to order your Moser axles so I can mount my 5 bolt SSRs. How soon will you be offering the GSL axles/big brakes, or should I find an SE rearend? A Ford 8.8 is on the table too if I go for 350+ hp on the TII swap.

The extra part for the GSL kit is scheduled to be laser cut next week. Then I need to powder coat them. Say 1.5 to 2 weeks.

Off hand do you know the offset and width of GSL-SE wheels? What about the width of the convertible wheels?

I'm glad to see this finally becoming available. I have a 86 GXL that I could get all the needed parts from, but, I have an 83 with the smaller bearings.

Billy, I have one question. Does this rear BB kit need a GSL or GSLSE housing, or can it be used on a drum housing? I believe the only difference between the drum housing and the GSL housing, is the number of axle retention bolts. Any chance of offering the drum housing option in the future?

EDIT: nevermind, I noticed it uses an adapter bracket to go from the original caliper mounting bracket. I thought it had a complete new caliper mounting bracket, like the front kit.

BBS Convertible wheels

82transam - I built my own conversion a few years ago. I used a pair of SE axles, had them redrilled for the 5 bolt pattern - note this only requires drilling 4 holes. I also used the BBS alloys from a 1990 convertible. I had to use a 1 1/4 inch spacer on the front, but no spacer in the rear. I was not aware the SE axles were different in length - we just installed the axles and built the caliper adapter as needed to fit.

I am running 225-50 tires, and I have adequate clearance inboard and outboard. Pictures of my installation here:

I am glad someone is doing this kit. I had a lot of requests , but my machinist is just too busy with other things, and I am busy with the Stiletto project.

I believe Convertible wheels are 15x6.5 +40 offset.
Before tirerack discontinued wheels for the 1st Gens they suggested the following:
Non SE with 15X7 wheel use +18 offset.
SE with 15X7 use +25 offset.

Since this thread concerns your big brake kits, what brake line set is needed for the front and rear TII calipers. The kit I bought used didn't come with brake lines and I will need a full set of 4 if I add your rear kit to compliment the fronts I have.

My personal preference would be the ss line set, but I'm not sure what I would need to order. I don't even have the banjo bolts for the calipers. Can you offer or put together a line set to complete your kit, or suggest a source for them. I don't know if the stock line set is compatable or not.

I may also be interested in adding the camber plates as the front end kit I bought also came with the MazdaComp LCAs and tension rods. I think may be I'm getting carried away in the handling department for a car that will rarely get to the track. Zoom Zoom.

Thanks for the resonses guys, looks like i might as well go with the SE axles, since thats what stilettoman used and his worked out not to need spacers.
Billy- just to confirm, all of that will work fine with a GSL housing right? (Pretty sure thats what I got from reading your above posts, but just want to make sure the e-brake etc will work)

carried away? Nooooo its the exact opposite, when you drive fast, and the idiot in the drift JDM sill80 conversion tries to keep up, he will get carried away.....by centrifical force

As long as the housing is a 84-85 big bearing our moser GSL-SE lenght axles will work. If it is a small bearing axle you will need to re-drill your own.

I was under the impression that a FC brake hose set would work out fine for hard line to caliper connections (obviously it won't have the body to rear axle hose) Is this true?

Yes they should. May not be the perfect lenght. I will start digging and see what I can come up with.
