Attn. Employees of Family

As some of you may or may not know, I work with my Father at our body shop here. Although I am more than just a regular employee, in the eyes of Revenue Canada, I am only that.

It was brought to my attention that as an employee of a family member I would not be able to collect EI if I were to be fired for whatever reason, despite the fact that I have paid into it all my life.

Well it turns out that the exemption of family members from collecting it, also spills into paying it. Meaning I can apply for a refund of 3 years of payments plus interest and after the ruling and payment are issued, Ill no longer have to fork over the EI payments off each paycheque.

Now, if you're reading this and are in a situation where you're employeed by family, don't just stop paying your EI. Get in touch with Grants International (out of Edmonton I believe??) their phone number is (204) 989-5666 ext. 180 (that is Katharine Brazer) they need a few things like photocopies of old T4's and some info about the company, but they will handle the refund process and file the claim and get your ruling.

Just thought I'd let you guys know since, well, I attended business school and somehow missed this up until now, so I have a feeling its not a well known fact.

Canadian Tire has some nice scooters j/k

I hate EI. I have to pay into it yet I will never be able to collect until I'm out of university and in a job for a year because my contracts with companies only last 4 months, then it's back to university for 4 months, lather rinse repeat.

Do you think I could get a refund for this? So far I've gone through 3 summer jobs (lasting ~2 months each) and 2 4month contracts all in the past 4 years.

Well give Grants a call, Im not positive whether or not you'll be able to, but as far as I know when you're not in a position to collect it, you don't have to pay in. But that could just be if you will never be able to permanently.

But its worth a call for sure!!

I used to hate EI... until I needed it.

When my wife got transferred from Ottawa to Vancouver, I left my well paying job and moved here looking for work. The money I got from EI meant that the bank didn't take our house! lol.

Seriously though, the system has a ton of flaws but in principal I support its existence. What I don't support is the abuse of that system - which is rampant.

Congrats on the claim!

Not sure when I'll be back, but the plan is still to return. I'm hoping to come back for a visit in the spring with work, so I'll keep you guys posted if I can make that happen!

LOL ahhhh the coveralls. Yeah, they were... um... tight to say the least. It was more of a sauceage casing than an outfit! The next trick was squeezing myself into the damn car! Good times... good times.
