Exclamation Damaged my Truck

I went to PartSource to pick up some cotter pins for the 7 and when I backed in to a parking spot I damaged my truck's bumper on the pole they have set up in front of every parking spot.

Why are those things there anyway?

The poles show a lot of evidence of damage. So they must know that they are damaging their client's vehicles. And every other store uses curbs that lay flat on ground and don't hurt anything.

I contacted the manager and he'll have the owner call me back. I then contacted a lawyer who'll call me back also.

In the meantime I've taken pictures of the damage. I guess I'll also take pictures of the poles showing the chipped paint on the parking lot side and the untouched virgin paint on the sidewalk side.

I know that people in the country who get there mailboxes plowed over continually cannot erect an indistructable pole at the expense on the next, careless, sleepy or drunk driver. So why can PartSource do this without paying fo the damage that occurs?

[cursing on]...WTF people...!?[/cursing off]

Any suggestions anyone?

Oh yeah, women hit those all the time...

Seriously though, they are there to stop people driving their cars through the front door and looting the place. You'll find them on all store fronts that have a lot of glass and house high dollar inventory. Look at a Best Buy or Future Shop.

Sorry to hear about the incident, and good luck with the claim, but I doubt they'll give you anything. Unless the posts don't conform to a minimum height/colour/placement requirement in the bylaw for the area, then you are probably SOL. They'll just say "It's a stationary object that complies with all construction laws and codes, and you are the one who hit it. While behind the wheel you are responsable for your car's control. The fact that it is all marked up just proves that there are a lot of innatentive drivers out there."

The store I used to work at had a post for a block heater plug that was pushed over several times.

After the guys fixed it a few times they put a two foot cardboard tube around the post and filled it with concrete. A week later there was a big crack all the way around the concrete.

The post was short. If I were backing up a pick-up truck I probably wouldn't be able to see it. (In my 7 it wouldn't be hard to see.)

I never heard of a single person ask for repairs to be paid for after they drove into it.

Maybe the store might make the posts taller or something but I don't know if you will get your repairs paid for.

Oh and driving through a store window to steal stuff isn't all that uncommon. It's known as a "smash and grab" and often the vehicle is stolen.

We had someone do that to one of our stores late one night. A customer at a nearby fast food place drove up and parked perpendicular behind the truck that drove through our window. He's kind of lucky he didn't get hurt but the criminals didn't get away.

Well, if that were true then Chrysler wouldn't be surcharging every single vehicle $5000 to cover the cost of claims. There is also reponsibilty on the other guy to not put the public at risk.

And when you know that something you are doing/have done is causing damage then a repsonsible person should pay up.

Have you ever went shopping to come back to your car to see a shopping cart found it's way to your car and damaged it?

Well, you could curse the person who left the cart, or you could go back in the store and tell them what happened and ask that they repair the damage. I have, twice, and both time they paid my insurance deductible.

That's okay putting it up, but once someone gets injured hitting it, and lawyers become involved then things change. The value of a mailbox will be compared to the value of the damage. But I'm not a lawyer.

I'll be trying to contact corporate customer relations tomorrow since the owner hasn't called me back today. The estimate on the bumper comes to $750.

last week I was at price choppers in leamington and the cart guys were putting the carts back up front of the store from one of those garages, they had like 90 of them and the lead guy wasn't paying attention and the group of carts "split" and the back half (probably 70+) SLAMMED into some lady's car and pushed it over like a foot! I was parked right behind her and saw the whole thing happen, it was nutty.

And the shopping cart guys? put the carts away and went inside. When I came back about 20 minutes later (was on a delivery) the lady was out looking at her car so I told her what happened and she went inside... I couldn't believe they didn't leave a note or anything!
