Should I drive this far in my new RX?

Just got my 83GSL. Seems to run and drive great... I need to make a drive to Chicago next weekend. Its about a 7 hour drive. Do you think the RX would make it without too much trouble? I'm usually nervous to drive older cars far, but this car would be perfect to take. Anything special I need to keep in mind?

Thanks,
Matt

do an oil change before you go and check all the belts/hoses etc. If the car runs good now you shouldn't have a problem. I like long trips in the rex, it makes me think i actually get GOOD gas mileage!!

YEah, the worst thing you can do for your car is city driving... the best thing is long-distance stuff. I (used to) regularly do 500+ miles a day in my SA.

the only breakdown I have ever had was the rear wheel bearings failing massively on me about an hour from the house....I should have known better they were making god awful noises forever. (I had an alternator freeze up once but that is expected from time to time.)

make that drive

Everything should be fine, just make sure you check over the basics.
Oil, belts, hoses, coolant etc.. Carry some oil and coolant with you just in case too.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone.. I feel a lot more comfortable driving that distance, so I will do it. I will give everything a good check-over before i go.

One last thing before you go! If you just got the car change your fuel filter. To be comfortable with your desicion also do an hour to hour1/2 straight city drive first. If you have no over heating problems or anything that makes you nervous than fly like the wind. By the way you probably will be tempted to fly so a radar detector is a good idea!

I wish I could have a radar detector... Damn pigs.

Do you know you can get a ticket for flashing you highbeams at oncoming traffic to warn them of a speed trap ahead of them... Obstruction of justice or some ****..

Radar detectors are flat out illegal here in VA.

you're not supposed to flash your high beamers, you're supposed to blink your lights (turn them on and off a few times)

mdooner, good advice for driving the rex. Bad when I am driving my wifes POS. She has those day light blinding lights. As for radar detectors, just practice ripping one off the dash in record time. But make sure you don't leave the common suction cup marks or anything. Or if you use velcro just have like a little note pad or something that you can stick in place of the detector if you get pulled over. Us forgetful people should never drive anywhere without a note pad, our wives would get mad if we forgot to drop by the store or something. Isn't it amazing though, that there was a device created specificaly for breaking laws! Just too funny if you ask me.

I heard that VA troopers have radar detector detectors, any truth to that?

About long drives....it's all about how confident you are in your car. I could leave at the drop of a hat and drive to CA if I needed to. Grab an oil filter and some oil for a change and I'd be gone. I keep extra plugs, wires, belts, starting fluid, cables, fuses, small gas can, and a little bit of all of the misc fluids that I need in my storage compartments and my tool box in the hatch just in case. I know my car would make it, barring I don't hit Bambi or a drunk decides to play bumper cars

Pantyhose makes a good belt emergancy replacement. Carry some, or just get a ***** when you break a belt.

Some rador detectors come with VG2 Cloaking. This feature essentually turns off the detector for 30seconds and then checks for the "rador detector dectector" again if it doesn't it will go to normal mode. I've had mine since '96 and can say with out resevation that its one of the best investments ever! But I have gotten one speeding ticket since '96. But it has saved my *** numberous other times. They are not designed to make your car invisble, just give you some prior warning if they are in the area with in 1-2miles. I got my ticket from a instant-on radar so I didn't get a break there. Helps to have other drivers going the same speed your are. Thats why I tend to go the speed limit for a while till a pack of fastee's go by and join up them!

Just today on the news they announced that Texas State Troopers now have radar detector detectors....only for use on trucks though, as radar detectors are still legal in Texas for passenger vehicles.
