I bought an SE tranny a while ago for $50!!! I stored it in my garage and worked on getting the help I needed to install it. I also bought all the stuff needed when replacing a tranny...clutch, front cover, seals, gaskets, bearings...etc...etc...

Well...this past Friday Inittab and 82transam and my cousin were all under my car doing the swap...

things discovered:
the pilot bearing in there was down to nothing ... my pre-cats were empty (yet I still passed inspection - go figure )...and the old tranny had metal shavings when emptying the fluid

after installing the new tranny we called it a day...the next morning my cousin and I filled it with redline mt90 and took her for a ride...MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE IN THE NOISE...I actually hear my engine now instead of the grinding...

I did notice a couple of things...when shifting i hear a knock...dunno what it could be...tranny? driveshaft? diff? (diff is doubtful since we did nothing and it wasn't doing the knock before)

Another thing is we forgot to put the pilot bearing seal...i was told it wasn't a big deal...but it should be put in at some point...

so i would like to thank eddierotary for the tranny and inittab and 82transam for the help installing and everyone on the forum for helping with the tips and tech info

 

you mean it didn't blow up? No **** guess we know what we're doing afterall What kind of knock? Is it when shifting any particular gears or all of them? Anyway, glad to hear it worked out, that was one helluva job to do in one day, even if there was a bunch of us working on it. I'll be interested to see what the consensus is about the seal...

 

I was the one who told him that the pilot seal was no big deal...

However I did tell him that after several tens of thousands of miles, the lack of lube and the clutch dust will trash that bearing.

Regardless, he's gonna have to drop the tranny to add the seal anyhow, what's another $20 bearing...

Besides it's already been run, right? So just pick up another bearing and throw it in when you have the time.

I too wanna see how many people agree with me or are gonna flog me for giving bad advice.

So what's knocking, rabbit?

 

Its difficult to explain but here it goes...

when i put it in gear and accelerate it'll knock if i let off the pedal and let the clutch slow the car down...it'll also knock in between shifts if i'm accelerating hard...
just 1 knock as if there's a space in between the teeth of the end of the driveshaft where it meets with the transmission...(dunno what thats called)...or could it be the driveshaft itself knocking against something on the outside? we did check the driveshaft and it is tight in there or it could be something in the tranny itself? not sure...doesn't sound good though, i know that

are there any things in particular i could check? could the driveshaft not been put in there right?

 

I'm not sure I would have trusted those shady people. Who knows what else they left out, maybe fifth gear.

no i left 5th in, but took out reverse, that'll teach him

 

it probably on the rear end that is loose, the gear it self are getting worn or the bearings, i have that same noise betwen shifting and is because theres play on the gears on the rear end
