So I've been doing some research when I learned about a VATN turbo. Anyone know where I can pick one of these bad boys up? I sent some e-mails out to a few turbo places but haven't recieved any response. Just wondering if they make something in the T-88 flavor range.

For any that aren't farmiliar with it VATN stands for Variable Area Turbine Nozzle. Basically it has a variable A/R ratio resulting in far less lag. I stumbled acrost this while reading the book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell.

 

they are ususally small turbos and there are very few applications for us (considering our stockers dont really have any turbo lag and put out more cfm them they probally do). Most of the ones i have see/heard of are for motorcycles and smaller 4bangers which cant handle more then 5-8psi max. when people upgrade turbos, since they are spending the money they usually go with a larger turbo (T04S/R or if they want even more power T78/T88 although im not many will put up with the cost or turbo lag of a T88).

BTW: why do you want a T88 flavor range? a nice T78 is fairly large enough for most i think but i guess everyone has their own thing.

Personnaly i would just get a large turbo+a bit of progressive/programable nitrous to help spool it. that or just get a highstall converter for an auto or rev fairly high and drop clutch for drag

P.S. i highly doubt you will find anything in the vatn area which will bolt up, you will have to custom make all the piping/dp. if you can weld, that is no problem at all but many here dont.

 

Ford was using VATN turbos on their powerstroke diesels for a while. I'm not sure if they still are but try looking there.

 

20B + T88 size = fat hp. Just want to minimize lag as much as possible.

 

The new VATN design is called VGT (variable geometry turbine) and Garret makes it in its GT line of turbos.

It uses hydraulic pressure from engine oil system to move vanes so they are less prone to seizing.

The new Ford Powerstroke 6.0 diesels do have a GT37 VGT. I would say it is too small for a performace 20B, but then Mazda choked up the 20B w/ tiny twins...
