The other engines I've taken apart, I've used a bigass breaker bar. I want to cheat and use an impact if possible. Anyone know? I'm going to go ahead and start on the bridgeport tonight.

 

I don't see why not. And make sure that bridge-port turns out nice and fat.

 

Taking them out you can. Don't use it to put them in.

You should be Okay, Wrench-hand. Just be careful that you don't snap a head off...Use the lowest power needed to get them to go....Speakin' of impacts, I just used mine to take out an 02 sensor that wasn't budging, and beginning to lose corners...

I wouldn't... I've been told that you should go around, first cracking 'em all loose, then going around again and again until they're all loose. Like doing an aluminum cylinder head, except with a much greater chance of screwing stuff up. (Probably only important if you're going to be reusing all of the housings, not haveing the side housings lapped, etc.)

Just follow the recomended loosening sequence in the manual and the engine will be ok. Use a speed handle or something. Air tools for this?

I used a 3/8 drive ratchet and breaker bar on mine.

 

im goin to go get an impact wrench this weekend if i can. they just look like loads of fun. ive already got a 6hp 30 gal craftsman compresser, is that enough? any other tools you guys recommend i pick up this weekend while i have a hole in my pocket hehe?

If you haven't purchased anything but the compressor.....

Go back to Sears and purchase their Starter Kit...Contains a yellow "curly" hose (self-storing for the purists) a blow gun, tire chuck, and a bunch of couplings. They're all good things to have. Next, get a 45% swivel, Sears should have that too. It makes working on cars lots easier as you won't have to struggle with hose. Get a water filter, and if you're lazy like me, an in-line oiler. Connect your oiler to one end of the "curly," and the swivel to the other end, that way only your "curly" will have tool oil in it and you'll find working your air tools off the "curly" with a swivel is the only way to rope down a job.

Tools: Good 1/2 inch impact, not a cheapy....Get one that puts out some real torque. 3/8 Rachet, 1/4 rachet, air hammer, cut-off tool, and air drill.

I sell the air compressor you bought....It's a good one, and it will run everything you need to work on your car. I also picked up the sand-blaster kit from Sears....Makes taking care of underneath rust areas a snap....

well i have the starter kit, a 3/8 ratchet, the water filter already, a decent paint gun, the starter kit from sears yeah, oh and a couple BFH's, hehe big f'in hoses. whats the 45% swivel? i didnt see that. oh also where can i get some nice disconnects that dont leak air and arent a pain to put tools on? i wish i had a sand blaster, thatd clean up all my stuff layin around real nice.

 

Loud, weak, and slow. I never use mine; might as well have flushed that $30-$40 down the toilet. Get yourself a good 1/2" impact. I just picked up a campbell hausfeld from Lowe's that puts out 550 ft/lbs - zips off flywheel nuts like they're nothing. Best thing was it was less than $70.

Other items you might want:
3/8" impact (butterfly or regular)
die grinder
air hammer
set of impact sockets

 

Pretty sure he meant 45 degree swivel. Helps to get into tight spots...
