I'm starting to think my car has a mind of its own....my car was up on jacks for a week after it didnt pass inspection due to leaking rear wheel cylinders. I ordered them, got one the next day, the other - Autozone/Fedex screwed up my order 3 times in a row. I didn't know when I would get the other wheel cylinder so i decided to take the igniters off and test them.

I took them both off and bought some stuff at Radio Shack to make the test circuit. Today I got a message that the wheel cylinder finally came in so I got it put in and put the drum brakes back together (which is great fun ). I want to get it inspected as soon as possible so I can drive it so I figured I would test the igniters later, and I put them back on. I bled the rear brakes, put the tires back on, and lowered the car off the jack stands.

I tried to start it up - cranked, but no start. I tried a few more times and still nothing. Then I noticed that the tach wasn't giving a signal. So i figure something must be wrong with the igniters since the tach is run off one of them. I took them off again and the connecters were bent so I fixed them and put the igniters back on. I tried to start it again and this time the tach worked and the car sputtered for a second and then died. I tried this a few more times and the same thing happened. I thought - flooded; so I pulled the leading plugs, cleaned them, disconnected the fuel pump, and cranked the engine a few times. I put everything back and tried again. This time it sputtered a little longer but died again. I went inside for a break and then back out to try some more. This time i went all out - I pulled all the plugs, sprayed them with engine degreaser, cleaned them off, sanded a tiny bit, then put them aside. I cranked the engine (fuel pump disconnected again) about 4 or 5 times; put everything back and when I tried to start it - nothing but cranked, no hint of starting. At this point I gave up.

Later on two of my friends came over and we were talking about my car. One suggested that I might be out of gas. I would have to slap my self if that was it, we went out and checked - nope it was fine I had about a quarter tank. Then they said they wanted to listen to see if they could hear anything diagnosable. I cranked it, and just like before - nothing. Then I was like "Everything is the same as before except one thing...," there was a vaccum plug I took off on the carb because I read a post about having to leave the air vent solenoid unplugged if you take out the rats nest (I took mine off a couple weeks ago). I had taken off what i THOUGHT was the right plug. So I put it back on, except it wasnt even snug - it was waaay to big - probably didn't even change anything. Anyway, i cranked it again - BOOM it started up beautifully and ran/idled better than ever. First I said "AWESOME!" then I took off the plug to see if that was the problem. Cranked it and started up just as well as before. It doesn't make any sense, I messed with it all day long and then after I gave up it just decided to start. I hope you enjoyed my little (well not very little) story .

 

Gotta hate when that happens.

And yeah, the 7 has a way of it's own... I know I've been through hell and back with mine only to realize that I didn't really do anything.

yea the brakes work fine i just gotta go get inspected now. i took it for a test run around the block (i wouldve went farther but i have expired inspection...well i wouldve anyway but my mom wouldve killed me) and it was awesome, it felt so good to drive cause it was sitting on jacks all alone for a week

Ya it sucks when the car gets put up on the stands for long periods of time, especially during prime driving time.

They will be going back into storage soon enough

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a possessed 7! I don't know how many times I thought I fixed the car because it started, only to find out a week later that what I fixed wasn't the problem at all; she just decided to start that day. Scary.
