How much oil loss is too much?

ok heres the scoop, i did a complete oil and filter change about 2 weeks ago, and today i checked the oil level and it was mid inbetween E and F, i know the rotaries burn a bit of full, but does this sound like too much, do i have a seal problem, i can't see any wierd colored smoke out of the exaust, and its not leaking any oil, i also use lucas oil additive. thanks in advance.

Well, there is most likely a problem there. Yes, they burn oil, but not that much. I drove my car two and a half months, and the dip stick still read full.

So too much oil missing, is when it is visible you are losing so much!

actually, i believe they are spose to lose about 1 quart for every 3000 miles, so that is a good basis, if you are losing quite a bit more than that, there is something wrong, but if you arer right around there you are good to go.

That's not really a good guide as it depends largely on how hard you drive. But yeah, if you find yourself adding oil every week or two (or daily as I did with my old engine ) then there's something wrong. It usually means the oil control o-rings are starting to wear out.

Well, since you said you did a oil change and you checked it week later, I bet between you changing the oil and the small amount it burns, it's that low because your not compensating for the empty oil filter. I believe the E and F lines only constitute for one quart of oil. The small filters can hold half a quart, if you used a larger filter, I'm betting that's where your "missing" quart of oil went.

Always, Always! ALWAYS! Start the engine directly after an oil change, then stop it and recheck. Helps you find loose/double gasketed filters, lose drain plugs, and gets oil into the system. In addition, it lets you add that half a quart thats goes into the filter or the rest of th oil system.
