main fuse can blow me!

well i'm helping a friend to get his car started the battery was dead so we replaced it and now we keep blowing main fuses?? it's got a realy small battery don't know why could the battery be to large for the car?

also, did a search but it didn't realy help had the alternator tested and it was fine. one question though the voltage regulator is internal right?

and one other question is there a certain side of the fuse the wires go to? if so is there a way to diferentiate which side which one goes to?? any help would be appreciated

thanks guys
james

blowing the main fuse indicates you have the battery installed wrong such as the pos and neg terminals are backwards.

Did you get the correct type battery??? most standard batteries have the termials reversed, when comparied to the battery type used in the FC

terminal ends can go any which way, as long as the POS is on the positive terminal and NEG is on the negative terminal. Blowing a fuse may be because of a short, like the pos is in contact with the neg, or ground. Does it only blow when you crank engine, or does it happen when you turn key to accessory? The voltage rectifier is in the alternator. The mazda factory service manual tells you how to do many different test to the alternator. If you don't have one, PM me and I can tell you where to download one free of charge.

i actually have the service manual but did not have it with me at the time. ok so i can put the ring ends on either side of the main fuse i need the ones from the alternator and harness on the driver side with the battery cables. great, oh and it would blow when i was connecting the battery?? i couldn't touch the negative with out the fuse blowing? but, now i'm going to try to get another battery and if that doesn't work then i'll be back.

thanks again

If the fuse blows just as you are connecting the cables then you are either connecting them backwards or have a major short. This should be an easy problem to fix; just take your time and look everything over. But be careful of the battery exploding which can be an ugly sight.

Same thing happened to my old NA. The small wire on the back of the alternator was bare and touching metal. Check for things like that.
