An 8 year old destroyed my car :(

Please be patiant with pics loading. The server they are hosted on is old school 486. don't laugh

I got my rx7 about 4 years ago. I bought it for $400, clean body for the most part, shot motor, bad trans, bad rear diff, trashed interior, etc. I wanted the rx7 for autox and drifting. I knew it would take a lot of work but I didn't care. I just wanted a project. After month and months of reading and learning form the knowledge on the board, I decided to start working on it. I bought a 88n/a 13b and swaped that in. I even made a write up several years back on how I did it. I did all the delete mods I could. PS was shot anyways so that was deleted, AC was deleted as it didn't work, BAC, EGR and rats nest were all removed. I custom made a CAI for it, then used MSD 6a for spark on the leading plugs, and put on a full racing beat exhaust. Then It came tome or the trans and diff work. I pulled both and took them to a local show and had them rebuild them. $3000 later, I had a good as new trans and LSD. I bought a center force dual friction clutch and put it all back together. Then it was suspension. I put on tokico HP shocks and B&G progressive rate springs, ST adjustible sway bars, Megan Racing front sturt tower bar and rapped the stock rims in kuhmos.

Then it was interior work. I bought door panels, carpet, seats, headliner, etc whereever I could find it. Finaly it was coming together. After 2 years of work I decided to stop and just enjoy the car for a while. I drove it for about a year and just loved it. I took it to autox with me and even learned to drift in it. I went throough 3 sets of tires that year jsut having a blast in it. I decided that my winter project would be to go turbo. So I bought s4 intake and exhaust manifolds. I had a set of 350z inner coolers laying around the shop and a supra BOV. I bought an s5 turbo and start the fab the exhaust. As for fuel and spark, I decided to go MS. I built the ecu and was finishing up the wiring harness when on fateful day, I was going to work on my mother in laws car....

It was a nice day out. I cleand up and locked my garage up. I jumped in my truck and headed out. about 10 later I get a call from my neighbor. He says the garage is FIRE! WTF! I flip a bitch in the middle of the road and drive as fast as I can back home. I get there in about 4 mins flat. I pull up and jump out of my truck and see nothing but fire and smoke engulfing the whole garage. I tried to get a glimps of my car but nothing. I asked the fireman to take a picture and bring it back to me... This is what I see.

http://www.changstromco.com/7-27-2006/7-27-2006-09.jpg

A few hours later they allow me to go take my own pictures. Here's the front of the garages:

http://www.changstromco.com/7-27-2006/7-27-2006-02.jpg

And here's the back where the fire started...

http://www.changstromco.com/7-27-2006/7-27-2006-23.jpg

I couldn't believe my eyes. 4 years of my work down the drain. my beloved 7 was gone... I looked under the ar and the fire was hot enough to melt the bell housing to the concrete... The car was trashed. More pics below of the car itself:

carright after the fire was out. car is still smoking..)

The fire was hot enough to melt this part of my spare trans:

Pics DSC00089 - DSC00147 are pictures of all the spare parts I lost and tools I lost.

My Friends as prety upset because I built a KA24E for his 89 24sx and look what was in the fire:
http://www.changstromco.com/car/DSC00110.JPG
http://www.changstromco.com/car/DSC00111.JPG

I also had a spare trans and such for him and jsut too much to list. The fire was estimated at $250,000 of damges to structure and property. my damges were assets to be about $30,000. Turns out an 8 year old kid decided that it would be ok to play with a box of matches. Somone had leened an old set of matrasses await the trash pick up, up against my garage. The 8 year was lighting matches and pushing them into the matress. Darwin won and the the matresses caught on fire. And the wrost part of all this is that I didn't even get a dime out of it. My renters insurence only covers my apt. My car insurence was going back to full coverage in about 3 days. I had it taken off full coverage because I was working on it. I dont' need an accidental death policy on a car that's sitting in my garage. So no insurence money. And after I begged my lawyor to look into the assets that the kids family had, we found they had nothing to sell, no cars, no money(they lived off of welfare), and no savings. So even if i did win the lawsuit, i wouldn't get a dime for a long time.

As you might have guessed, that was back on july 27th. The Wife, after months of begging, has agreed to let me get another 7! Woot! I don't have a ot of money though.... So if anyone has a GSL-SE that they'ed sell or trade for, lemme know ASAP! I wanna get back in a 7! I want to hear that miserable alarm on sunday morning because I have to go work on the car again!

email me at jchangstrom@inebraska.com or PM me. Thanks guys.

Wow, thats some pretty scary stuff. Hits pretty close to home because it could happen to anyones project. One second it's there and the next second everything you have worked for is gone.

Sue the kids' parents. They are liable for his actions, since he is a minor.

You know as much as I feel that suing for any reason has become the "american way", it may be something to consider in this case.

I only saw on pic... the engine bay burnt... My God I don't know what I would do, to that fucking kid. That kid... his parents should be your slave(s)

God bless you for not flipping out in a "moment of passion ;-|" and killing his family.

Good luck on your new car.

Make them get you a seven, and have the kid work on it with you. That way you get a little help, a car, and you can help to teach the kid to play with cars instead of matches

After having owned rental property, and having 4 fires in 8 years, I got out of it. Fires suck. Sorry for your loss, I know how it feels.

Sorry about the loss of your seven. I'm willing to help you with few spare parts. And if you're willing to pay for shipping, I may have a complete shell for you less motor.

Sorry to see this happen. Was the fire on 7-27 like the picture title says? Did I do something to anger the gods on my bday?
