You should file a claim in small claims court. Costs very little & you don't need a lawyer. Get all the info from the fire dept. (& any other evidence) that backs your case. You'll get a judgement, & may possibly be able to get some money from the parents in the future.
The reason there is so much crime in this country (or anywhere) is that kids grow up not having consequenses for their actions. If they're *really* poor, don't literaly take food off their table, but make sure there are consequenses. You'll be doing the kid a favor.
Did you see my post on collector car insurance? No help now but keep it in mind for your next car.

**** happens, look at the bright side
I had an 80 that i rebuilt, loved every moment of the sweat and bloody knuckles, etc...... Came out one morning to the garage and it was gone. Cops found it 2 weeks later. Nothing left. They even took the indicator lights, everything was gone.
Now for the bright side. Now i have an 85 SE. Learned from the 80 and I'm doing things differently. It still sucks because all i have left of the first project is one photo. The SE sits in the garage and even though it has not moved in 6 months it's still fun to work on. At a minimum it's a place the wife stays away from. I get my private "cave" time. One day soon when i'm done with the rear end I'll get to drive it for a day then turn it around in the garage and rebuild the front end.
It's not the destination but the journey that provieds the pleasure and wizdom. My one bit of ZEN you can take to the bank. Good luck on the next project. You'll have more and better fun the second time around.
And that fire bug needs to be smacked around a bit, and his welfare parents.

surely they have something u can burn...cardboard box, paper clip.....how poor are they...if the can raise a kid they can come up with at least some money.u should do a payment plan or something.he cant just get away with it...
I know this thread is kinda old, but if you're still looking for an SE I have one i'll sell, and it's in Lincoln.
With the amount of mods I want to do, I decided it would be best to get a non-SE FB to build up. I have $1750 into my car right now, i'd sell it for that much as is, or $1600 without the wheels. The guy I bought it from wants to buy the wheels back for $100, and I bought 2 new tires which i'll take off and keep.
I was about to start the process of dropping the tank to have it cleaned and lined with that POR-15 sealer. Total investment of that is around $100 ($65 for cleaning, $35 for the sealer which I just bought). I'll go ahead and do that if you add $100.

And the reason for dragging up a 5 month old thread is what? Is it to truely convey sympathy for the thread starter, 'go to the fire and watch **** burn', or things have been frustrating lately and it's easier to vent on the kid that started the fire instead of dealing with one's own personal problems? Just a little food for thought gents.

On a side note, karma is a bitch. So about 2 weeks ago, a kid was out in the back of my neighbors car. I came running outside and caught the kid inside the back seat of the car. I notice the rear passenger window is busted out, there was glass everywhere and backpack on the ground. It's not hard to see what this kid is doing. So I ask him the obvious question, "What the hell are you doing?" He tells me that he's collecting pop bottles and cans for his schools recycling drive. "And you thought the back seat of someones car was just the perfect place to look for those?" He tells me that this car is his parents car and to leave him alone. I call bs on that because I know the owner of the car and he's a little young to be having kids. I asked the kid for his name. Cody.......For all of you who don't know Cody if the kid who burned down my car. I introduced myself and watched the kids cocky expression turn into panic. I placed a call to the cops and had them come out. While I was on the phone The kid snuck out of the car and started to run. I went running after him. Sad to say, I've never felt better then when I tackled his *** into the cement. I picked him up and carried him back to the car and waited for the cops to show up. When they got there the kid tried to run again. Luckly, this time I was able to just reach out and grab him before he ran off. I explained to the cop what had happened. At that point the kids father came out and started to bitch me out about tackling his 9 year old son. The kid was fine except for a few scraps form the cement. The cop told the father to stop and to wait over on the sidewalk. I stayed standing there. The office talked to the kid for about 10 mins and then asked me if I knew the kids name and such. I told him all i knew about the kid. The cop calls in for a record on the kid and finds out about the fire. The cop calls child services and put the kid in hand cuffs. At this point the father gets super pissed. He's already under house arrest for reason unknown to me. He gets up and starts running over to the cop and I. He tries to slug me and misses. Instead he ended up clocking the officer square in the jaw. The cop gets up and tasered his *** right then and cuffed him as well. I've never laughed so hard.

After about 30 mins, child services shows up and starts asking questions. The officer demands to search their home. Seems how the father was under house arrest, the office doesn't need a warrant. Evidently, he found some drugs and a few other odds and ins. So mom got arrest as well. It's about time some **** happened to that family.
And I couldn't be happier. especially seems how I'm the one who busted the kid.

Cliffs: Cosy, the kid who burned down my car, got caught by me stealing from a car in the parking lot. I got the tackle the kid into the cement, watch the father get tassered and arrested, and watch mom get arrested as well.
There's nothing like closure.
Outstanding. Too bad the police officer didn't let you have some 'private time' with dad to teach him a lesson, but I suspect he may get that 'private time' in jail. I know it won't replace the loss of your car, but at least all 3 of them are going to get some time off the streets.
Oh my god!
i'm laughing so hard that i'm crying. Good to here there is some justice after all. Great Job on the arrest assist BTW. Now that we, colective of public of the US, are not paying for them to live in an apt/house, we can just pay to keep them in jail.
Good luck on getting a new RX7.
