I emailed Greddy about the problems w/ Spec II...

My email:

I recently purchased a Spec II and been happy with its performance; however, I have encountered a minor problem. Everytime I start the car it is as if the unit resets. I have boost set at 10 psi (stock) but it won't let me boost past 8 until I switch from lo to hi back to lo setting. I have found that other users in the RX7 community have encountered the same problem. Is there a bug in the unit or is it a feature not explained in the manual?

John Carrier

There response as follows (info@greddy.com):

I actually have yet to hear anything of that sort, but I would be interested in examining one of those units to determine if there is an issue that needs to be addressed. That system carries a 1year warranty, so if you contact the people you purchased the item from you can arrange to have them get a Return Authorization Number to have that item evaluated. Once we receive the product, and if we find there was a manufacture's problem, we will then issue that dealer another system to replace the item.

i've had my spec 2 for well over 6 months, and about once every month, sometimes more, it will reset itself completely. i'll have to go back through it and reset everything. i know it's not just mine, because a friend of mine has one in his wrx and it does it too. also, if i have it on the psi setting, it flashes and goes crazy when i go into higher boost, but doesn't do it in the kpa setting. my friend's also does this.

is that the same kind of stuff you are experiencing?

jxc-rex,

i've got the same issue as you've probably read. I was also told the same thing...to send it in for them to examine. I've decided that it's not a big enough deal for me to take it back off the car to send in for warranty.

I've also heard that keeping the unit in kPa's keeps this issue from happening. I have yet to try it out, and since my car is in storage at this point it will be awhile before I can.

Please update this thread if you manage to find out anything else about it. For me....this problem just serves as a reminder for me to check which setting i'm on when i start the car. The last few weeks before storing the car I've kept my Lo setting on (tuned to 8 psi), and I still managed to hit 10 psi with the cold temps @ WOT. If I'd had it set to 10 psi who knows what might've happened.

Is anyone gonna be nice enough to send theirs in so they can hopefully resolve this issue? Cuz I'm sure a fair share of us wanna see this issue resolved before buying ours...

Is it possible this is a power source or ground issue? With the weirdo electrical system in the 7, I wonder if fluctuations in voltage are causing these problems. Where are you guys hooking up for power?

i can't send mine in because i don't have enough downtime to let greddy manhandle my stuff. i know it's not the 7's electrical system because my friend's does the same stuff in his wrx. we've had better luck leaving it in kpa, but will still occasionally reset itself. also, do you think the color matters? ours are both silver and we bought them from the same place.

I have had similar problems in PSI mode. My main problem was the limiter kicking in too soon. I recently switched to Kpa and so far no problem. I put less than 1000 miles a year on the car so it has hardly been a comprehensive test period.

I can't imagine it would be the color. I would guess the guts come off the assembly line and the builder grabs either a black or silver case from the pile.

I almost bought one of those badboys too since the first one was such a big hit, ease of use, yada yada yada. Instead I went with the SBC i-D........
