99 Spec turbo's and downpipe fitment

I just recently was putting on 99 Spec turbo's and a downpipe from Gotham Racing.

The 99's have different "mounting"

As oppose to the 93's

This lead to having the downpipe hit the "mount" on the second turbo compressor housing

Here's a comparison from the 93's to the 99 spec twins

And here is WHY I got the 99 Spec turbo's

Later

Jack

Yeah, guys I would post a link until I get it settled out, but they deleted my thread. Is there anywhere else I can upload them, then attach to RX7Club?

I'm assuming the reason they can output more power is based on the 'zero-tolerance' turbine wheels? It looks like the manifold ports are actually smaller and the turbo's inlets dont look any bigger...

I would of thought in all the extra years they ran the RX-7 in Japan they would of redesigned the sequential system for more simplicity, reliability AND power... atleast we got power from the mix.

Manifold ports are exactly the same size, it's only optical illusion because of sharp edges and different color...

This problem with downpipe seems really strange... At least two guys running 99 turbos (Tim Benton, SleepR1) also have DPs and I've never heard about any troubles from them. Maybe one of the can comment? Maybe it's DP vendor specific problem?

The thing is, I also have those turbos and ATR DP waiting to be installed...

Do you have any solution to this problem?

Well, I was putting it on and noticed a gap on the second turbo side of the turbo-> downpipe manifold. Then noticed it was hitting the mount. I sanded the mount down ever so slightly and added another gasket and fixed the problem. The downpipe was from Gotham Racing, seems to hold up well so far. The Lower Odd-ball stud is hard to get to and can only be had with an open-end wrench. I can't wait until 500 miles!

Me and a friend of mine never had any problem putting on my 99 spec turbos. Bolted right on....

Oh yeah, after the 500 miles, you will feel that these turbos spools up a little faster and punch in harder than the 93-95.

IF you dont mind me asking, what did you pay for the turbos and where did you get them? I need to replace / rebuild / upgrade my turbos soon and I am still trying to decide what my best alternative would be.

I just installed a set from rx7.com, was roughly 2600 shipped. I also ordered new manifold gaskets. Damn those suckers are expensive.

I had no fitment problems with the downpipe. I'm running a M2.

It's after 500 miles for me because I put them on a brand new Remanufactured engine. Well, as of now it's 320 miles left

They were $2600 from Rotary Performance as well, a.k.a. RX7.com

I didn't have any fitment issues with my 99's. No problem with the manifold to the turbos or turbos to the DP. I have a stainless DP from rotary performance (I think).

I've got about 200 miles left, put $30 BUCKS in the tank today! Geez. For some ODD reason I think the downpipe might be "related" to the Megan Racing/Ebay Downpipe. If that expalins anything.

To be honest it prob. might just feel the same to others if their turbos are not blown or cracked. It just felted really good at high boost because I just haven't had that feeling for a long time...

the 99's were boosting about 200 rpms quicker to 13 psi than my old stockers, that had around 60k roughly. No cracks or fin damage on the old set either.

So there's more area under the curve with the new 99's.
