need wolf guru advice

i have some questions about tuning wolf3.1. s4 tII engine & turbo, 550cc inj x4, bov, aggressive streetport, 3" exhaust

i got the car with a raw base tune and unfortunately im clueless, i have never owned a turbo car before.. ive never really tuned any car at all before, that said im a quick learner and quite motivated. when i got the car it almost sounded like a p-port at idle and ran quite poorly untill u gave it a toenail of throttle then it jumped like a raped ape an got the turbo spinning, when i get on to boost i get misfires an mad popping out the exhaust. anything more then a toenail caused much the same popping and shuddering. idles at around 1300 and when coaxed just right runs quite smoothly thru part of the power band up to say 4000 ish. ive cleaned up driveability somewhat by calibrating the tps so itll read ~32 - 98, adjusted the acc enrich from MAP to tps (left load set to MAP) which has helped as well to a degree. previous owner told me he had the timing set at -5deg but im not sure if thats at the dizzy or the ecu, and im not sure how to check so question # one

Can i get an idiots crash course on timing and the wolf 3d, how to check it vs the pulley. it seems a stupid question as the answer seems obvious but id hate to blow my car up cuz i didnt ask. does keeping it at -5 offer me any safety against detonation while i figure out the fuel map?

second is regarding the fuel map. as i said it has a map that has the car semi drivable but little else. im afraid to get on it too hard cuz my wideband shows 14 to right off the scale at times and im not sure why. obviously i gotta tweak the fuel map but where to begin. so far my method is this

get on throttle.. watch wideband.. soon as i see afr 13 i hit the "nearest injection map point" and add 5 clicks (oh so scientific) to that point. id rather be rich then lean. is this seemingly logical method anywhere near effective or am i just playin with the fuse on my timebomb?

on decel the car is fine.. just cuts an drops to idle fine as well. as i mentioned above it accelerates nicely if i just gently squeeze the throttle however if i mash it i get all kinds of violence. my biggest issue is if i try to hold speed at any speed in any gear at any rpm i get an idly sort of lurch, i lose that sweet rotary hum and get almost an idle sound. get on the throttle a lil more an i get a bit of hesitation (has cleaned up a bit with some acc enrich tweaking) then wham i get the surge an the hum. any thoughts as to why i cant just maintain a constant speed?

ive got a heap more questions but ill start with that. i realise some of it seems like i havent read the manual (which i have studied for hours) or searched ( been all over this and nopistons forums) but its really a case of i havent found a satisfactory answer to an of these things. id rather be careful and ask redundant questions then shell for a rebuild. as i said im brand new to tuning an turbos but im learnin. ive managed to make a near undrivable car streetable, but just barely and without getting anywhere near its potential. perhaps you good people can help me get the rest of the way. or at least to a point where im not afraid to stomp on the gas and boost the **** out of it.

last thing for now i guess is if anyone has a fuel map and more importantly an ignition mapfor a similar set up if u can send a screenshot of it so i can see the numbers an compare em. i have no means of viewing the maps in anything but the point by point increments on the handheld, i suppose ill have to sit down an scroll trhu it all an write it down at some point but itd be nice to see a proper working map to compare to.

setting the timing, what i do is set the timing at -5 for all rpm and load band then use timing light and check at cas. if it can't be adjust there, then adjust the trigger angle. as far as the popping noise it seems to me as if the car is running lean. make it rich to be on the safe side then start taking away fuel. you will be safe running about 10 deg. in boost areas. -5 is to retarded. this is just my 2 cents as i'm no guru. hope it helps
