well I'm pretty new around and since rotory extreme is gone, I don't know where to get a 7 tunned anymore most shops here in San Jose California specialize in STI's and Evo's


would anyone be able to recamend some shops, and their experiances' with them

The nearest thing I can recommend is Wolf USA in Sacramento.

(916) 289-0488 is the shop phone number. Chris Greene is the owner and he's been working with rotaries for nearly 20 years. He has experience with Wolf, Haltech, Apex'i PFC, Microtech, HKS FPcon VPro, Electromotive, and Motec. So it really doesn't matter what EMS you're running he can tune it for you. Hope that helps some.

Yes, other people on here have been tuned by him. Everyone has been happy so far. I don't have the list of everyone's user name though. I know their first names, but that doesn't really help too much.

I have never dealt with Rick, but I have heard good things about him. I just didn't want to recommend anyone to you that I don't know or that I haven't had any experience with.

And no, he doesn't have a website.

I wouldn't say hosed, no. With that much custom work it takes a long time to complete and complete correctly. David waited, and waited quite some time. Things completely went to sh*t for Chris for a while. So David had the car taken to Gotham to be completed. But Chris has never and would never rip anyone off or "hose" anyone. Just what I've seen and heard from being at Wolf and talking to both Chris and Steve.

 

there is 2 sides to every story really, i know Chris had a rough time but i heard the whole story from David also as well as Chris, they both had legitimacy but in the end it took way too long, cost way too much money and wasn't near finished. i tried to get a hold of Chris to see if we could finish it together but he was nowhere to be found.

many people can mean well but it takes time to fix mistakes, if i screw up i sack up and fix it rather than trying to cover for things. it seems alot of people have stories to tell in the performance world of building cars, makes me want to rethink doing anything other than stock work.

 

the one thing about performance cars, if you are trying to fix someone els @#$@ up its very hard and takes alot of time, if its your own @#$@# up thens its kinda easiery... basicly when someone els @#$@# up you dont know where to start and what the guy did even if someone tried to explain to you.... some people dont understand this and expect too much when their cars been fiddled around with by someone els... and then they take it to another person...


some times some things are easy fix but not always...

 

believe me i know, i do the same thing day in and day out. sometimes i underestimate jobs and sometimes i overestimate them, you just never know... right now i have 3 engines in pieces and another install coming in this weekend, gets kinda sucky doing it all yourself day in and day out without any real vacations.. my vacations are cussing people out on the forums and our monthly meets, dyno days, Sevenstock, etc..

but i draw the line at holding a car for over a year, waiting on parts with a set goal in mind not getting anything done until the last minute. i consider myself quite slow at getting things done, maybe a month behind at times but i try to keep my priorities sorted out especially when someone has already prepaid for work to be done. there is some underlying circumstances at work also, like being held up waiting for the turbo, i know the feeling but i try to do other things at the same time while waiting, from my experience you can't rely on other people to come through for **** so do what you can when you can.

biggest headache car i have had lately is the turboed FB in the shop, been there for a year this month.. should have been a pretty straight forward build, wound up waiting on a DaVinci turbo that never came(if you know the story behind that one too...) the engine is prepped, ready to be put back together but at the last minute a change of plans was made, then again and finally i have something to work with again. difference is that project had different directions, chris's goal was 1 single direction, never changed but things just didn't seem to come together, in fact they almost seemed to go backwards if you saw the car before and after.

i was actually the one who sent the person(whom i wwon't name) to check out David's car and report to David on what was happening with it.

i doubt any one of us would want to be kept in the dark when someone has about $40,000 sitting in someone's shop half way across the country and not getting any answers from the tech working on it.

Chris's rep was tarnished from that point on, i still think he is a great guy, does great tuning and has tons of experience but he just sat on the car far too long before actually trying to do anything with it and then tried to toss it together in a matter of a couple of weeks, if the time was put in prior to his mishaps, well then it would have made them seem a bit trivial now but we all know if you let issues build up they tend to compound themselves and you wind up digging yourself into a hole you just can't dig yourself out of.

you can try to rationalize why the car wasn't done any way you want, but really.. anybody who works on cars, even if you lay a pile of scrap metal in front of them, given over a years time you could pretty much build a complete car out of that scrap, this was obviously an analogy but i am just trying to put things into perspective. his job was to install the turbo, fuel system, work out the bugs and do the tuning. waiting on the turbo seemed to be the killer here, but i myself would begin to question whether the turbo was really coming after just a couple of months time passed and after that i would consider something else. a lifetime project isn't worth it when an acceptable alternative is out there.. the turbo did finally arrive but what was done in the time it was waiting to arrive? afaik, not much. the fuel system could have been completed, the powder coating could have been completed(David didn't even specify even wanting it but chris wanted to do it) everything could have been in and ready for the intercooler, plumbing and the turbo to be in place and finalized.


i tried to defend Chris, i tried to contact him and help get things done but as it was so eloquently put he just disappeared. i just hope he gets things straightened out before more things begin piling up and start the process over again.

 

He seems to be back on track as far as I can tell. His new shop is twice the size of the old one and he has been turning cars at a pretty good pace lately. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone if I didn't think that he did a great job in a timely manner.

But yes, the David Hayes mess really did tarnish his reputation. And that is a shame because the guy is amazing when it comes to working on and tuning rotaries.

In fact, the only two people I would let touch my car are Chris and Karack. Now get back to work Karack!!

i might be taking a trip up to norcal sometime in january or so.
only problem is i don't have a dataloggit. if you've got one, you can join in for the dyno day i'm having (tentatively, of course) with a few of the rx8 guys.

if that does go down, i expect karack to be there--missed you at 7stock bro. and of course, the surprisingly white guy boosted.

we'll grab us some beers afterwards

OK so no one really added any info about where to get tuned in Cali except Chris.

Where can one go (or who can one go to) for reliable tuning?

 

this is mainly for norcal, you have plenty of choices in socal for tuning shops but having all of california listed in one thread is kinda of pointless since it is cluttery and most people do not want to drive an untuned car for 12 hours to be tuned.

Sorry to disappoint you gracer but Karack is right. This thread was started for NorCal tuners. Not so much SoCal. You have a few good choices down there though. Guitarjunkie and RR&R are the two that I would recommend. And for NorCal Karack and Chris Greene are the two best around. I doubt you'll find anyone who would argue that. Outside of David Hayes of course. And I really don't think you'd be able to find anyone that was unhappy with the work that Karack has done.

 

Good info nonetheless. I'm fairly new to SoCal and still getting up to speed on who's who.

 

I just spent most all my cash for some payments on some stuff i have but, I'd like to show at your tune just so i can meet people... I'm fairly new to FD's so I don't know many FD' owners in/around my area....


So if it's ok with who ever is holding the event i'd like to be there....
