I think they are still doing 1/8 mile drag racing at the Irwindale speedway, that is the closest racing to Los Angeles. They had a recent change of ownership or management, so it may be tough to find current information.

The Auto Club Speedway (In Fontana) is the closest road-race track. NASA and SpeedVentures are the ones who usually organize track days there.

The website for the SCCA's Los Angeles autocross chapter is www.solo2.com , they tend to have one event every month. There's an autocross today in Irvine, at the Orange County Great Park , which used to be part of the El Toro Marine Corps Airbase so you might find the location using either name. It's probably too late to register to race today, but it's free to spectate at autocrosses so it might be entertaining if you've got time to kill today.

Willow Springs raceway is about 100 miles north of LA, I'm not too in touch with their trackday schedule, but I'm pretty sure JustDrift.com holds entry-level drift practices and events up there.

Some of the local rotorheads used to organize meets and cruises around Malibu (about 20 miles away) or the San Bernardino mountains (about 60-80 miles away), but I haven't been to one of those for a few years so I'm not sure what's going on lately. Shoot me a PM if you find something that looks interesting, I might try to make it out there.

What are you thinking wanting to race in a V6 Camaro?

May as well be in a Civic.

It isn't a racing event nor anything but it is entertaining:
What about cars and coffee on saturday mornings? It is at the mazda headquarters in Irvine.

And people don't race Civics?

It so happens that it's the only nice "sports" car available at National under my Company's agreement so I rented it and would like to see how bad it really is at drag or track

I got an upgrade to Executive Elite, I'll check if i can get the Convertible Mustang to drive the Pacific Hwy to SF one of these weekends.

Irvine is kinda far from South LA isn't it? I'd like to go I guess I can plan to visit if I ever go to SF.

Anything interesting in San Diego other than the Zoo?

SF as in San Francisco? No dude Irvine is in in the middle of orange county (it's a rather small couty BTW) which is south of LA county. Sandwiched between San Diego and LA.

Anything to do in SD? As far as races you can check here:

Or you can always go into Tijuana and catch a donkey show... ha ha

doh!
for some reason I thought Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was near MNAO in Irvine and in my mind I placed Irvine up there when I looked up the track...

Thanks for the info! Now I looked in G maps and realized that Irvine is actually not that far from me!

Irvine is pretty close to LA, and the Cars and Coffee shows are definitely worth checking out. You've got to get there early, if you show up at 9am many of the cars will be leaving or already gone.
