There is too much traffic on the 78 west of Julian to have any fun anyway.

You guys are way too paranoid.

Some "fun" scenic roads I recommend:

1) Palomar Mountain - Go up the steep twisty south grade (watch your engine temps) and down the less steep east grade (careful - brake fade!).

2) Hwy S22 to Borrego Springs (up or down)

3) Sunrise Hwy up in Cuyamaca (too much traffic on weekends)

4) Some great roads all over in the far Northern part of the county around Fallbrook and such.

Good roads closer to the coast (but more traffic and less safe)

1) Highland Valley Road between I-15 and Ramona.

2) Most roads in Rancho Santa Fe (caution, very dangerous, lot of driveways)

I personally like:

Telegragh Cayon RD and take till it merges with interstate 94 all the way to Tecate. Too much traffic during daylight hours though.

Thanks guys. I've always liked the drive up sunrise highway, and have been planning a trip up there ever since I got my 7. It is what made me think of thsi thread,

I'm not asking for your cop-free roadracing hangout, I'm just asking for some fun and scenic roads. Its not like the cops don't know that sunrise highway is windy....

sorry not picking on anyone in particular, sorry andrew, but you guys with this shush attitude are silly. these roads have been there since before you were born, and im sure people have been 'cruising' on them for forever. hence the question of a canyon run areas, if you chose to do illegal things on these roads thats your fault.

silly. I guess you didnt here about the local OC crack down. It happend in riverside too. UC cops show up and **** everyone. I have 2 friends that have been impounded by fountain valley cops that were surfing the honda sites for cruises/GTG The s2000 guys posted up the autobacs meet and that was the end of it. They impounded around 5 ricers with a tv station in toe LAST WEEK in riverside. Took all the cars and sent them to the ref. The pigs are cracking down so you can never be too sure. Better to be safe then walking!!!!

Back in the day (15-20 years ago) we used to race in Del Mar at Villa del Valley from 5 to 15, as it used to be 14 miles, no lights and only one stop sign the whole way. We'd meet at the Mcdonalds and race from the stop light there in Del Mar all the way to 15. First one across the overpass at I-15 won.

But the last time I was down in SD, there was way way too many lights and stops on that road to make it cool anymore.

all i know is on of the roads listed here, you can drive on them any weekend and see BMW groups, motorcycles (crotchrockets and crusiers), and what have you on them. its not like they are the secret entrance to the batcave. the cops know they exist, if they are gonna get you there, its not going to be because someone posted information about them on this site.
im not talking about any ricer events, or even commenting on the prejudices towards import car drivers. im sure that might have something to do with the crackdowns, but information on these roads isnt super secret.

I know that up on the south leg of Palomar the CHP has been using grant monies to conduct stings and roundups. To make matters worse, people that live up on the mountain have been getting fed up and started taking matters into their own hands. They have been laying down gravel, sand, and oil (separately) on some of the turns. You can go up there and see where riders put up temporary signs warning about oil in an upcoming turn. Palomar South is a fun road but it can get crowded Friday-Sunday and that is when CHP is out.

What about taking 8 east coming down out of the mountains and then taking 8 back west through the mountains? Little bit of a drive but it's 2 lane each way so if some purple hair with white knuckles in her cadillac gets in front of you you can pass her.

Yes, SD has grown a lot. That run can still be a LOT of fun... but only at 3:30am. I used to live in Solana Beach and had to be at work sometimes in Escondido at 4:00am. I could leave at 3:45 and get there on time. Amazing what you can do with no traffic.
