Very frustrated, Losing hope in my FD

Good Evening,

Back in March the engine in my FD blew while I was driving on the Coronado bridge in San Diego. The car ended up going to a local shop to have the engine replaced. I bought a motor from the classifieds section and had it installed. While at the shop the owners told me I needed to buy new turbos so I did this as well. 2 months later I get the car back (4 days ago) and the car does not hold any boost pressure at all. I then took it to the local Firestone to read the CEL codes and I got one for the MAP sensor which I replaced today. No change.

I can hear the turbo spooling up as if there is a huge boost leak but I do not know enough, nor do I have the time to find out where this is coming from. I didnt expect after spending alot of money to get it fixed to have this issue.

I am hoping for someone here to refer me to a shop that can diagnose this issue and fix it for me without having to have the car in the shop for an extended period of time. This is my DD.

I try to keep a positive out look on the FD because it is a car that I have always wanted to own after being stationed in Japan. Problem is that the car is nickel and diming me to death and I can not afford it anymore. It seems like I am spending more money to fix it only to come up with new issues.

Thank you for reading and I am very sorry if this is the wrong place for this.

1st off man you are a boss. daily driving a fd is pretty ballzy.
if it is a boost leak you should check all your pipping. make sure all your rubber seals are tightly secured. start from your intercooler and check each seal. if you do not have the time to do this. im pretty sure there will be a fellow fd owner who would be willing to help. offer them beer =D for some reason they always come when beer is the payment.

Have you done a boost leak test yet? If your DD a fd I would learn to work on it.

I've been there before, it completely sucks. You need to check the rat's nest, check valves and solenoids, as mentioned before - all the IC pipings and couplings. It is very difficult to have the FD as a daily driver.

What mods have you done with the car, if any? Take your FD to reputable shop man.

Dude you are going about this the most expensive way possible. With this car you have to put some thought about how you want to handle it. Otherwise expect to pay $$$. You can check your engine codes by simply jumping a wire and counting the flashes. It takes about 5 minutes if you have never done it.

If you have the stock IC pipes: Five bucks says you have tear on the lower plastic hose that connects to your IC.

There are none in SD IMO. I go to the LA area in fact my car is there now. You really need to get yourself a bucket so you can daily while your car is in the shop.

This car is very expensive to own. But if you make the right modifications you can really minimize issues. IMO for a low maintenance FD it must be non sequential, radiator replaced, AST deleted, Precat replaced with a DP, H2O injection, a medium size aftermarket SMIC (with a duct), some IC hard pipes, and real CAI. Keep the boost to a solid 10 psi and leave the ECU alone.

If you can manage the drive and can get another car to drive temporarily, take it up to Lucky 7 Racing in Duarte.

Montego has given you some good info.

Also, check out the 3rd Gen forum:

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/

A wealth of good information there. If only I had found this forum before sending my FD to Alhambra Madza

Whatever you do, don't take it to the dealership!!!!

True newb status right there!

armaniex92 - You'll have to find a shop that specializes in FDs. Try neptunespeed in Huntington Beach. I've heard great things about them. My buddy is getting his RX8 motor replaced there.

And yes, this car will be expensive to own, so start saving for a beater when the FD is not running right. I have two beaters, just in case...

armaniex92,

Send me a PM and I will gladly talk to you about this. I am by no means a gear head but I have owned this car for 14 years so I may be able to offer some insight on a course of action.

Good evening everyone,

First I would like to thank all of you for taking the time to respond. I had Wednesday and Thursday off so I had some time to look at the car.

I work nights and when I come home after 13 hours I do not get to sleep because I watch my kids until my wife comes home from work. This is why I barely have time to look at this car.

I took the recommendations that were posted and checked for cracks/ loose vaccum hoses and did not find any. To be honest I do not even know if the intake is hooked up correctly. I know this sounds silly but it is what it is. I am here trying to learn and I am constantly looking to expand my knowledge on this car because I really do enjoy it like no other car I have had.

Here is the history of the car. I bought the car from here.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&highlight=rx7

I had no idea what I was getting myself into because I never properly researched the car before hand. Needless to say it had a ton of issues. I fixed them all(blocked off egr, replaced tps, replaced many hoses) amongst other things. On March 7th the engine blew like I was saying and I promptly bought a new motor from this thread.

Here are pictures I took today of the way the intake is hooked up.

Again thank you for taking the time to read and reply to this very long post. I really appreciate everyones responses however its not looking good. I think I am going to get to that point where i just take it to carmax just to get rid of it. That is how frustrated I am with this car. Nothing ever seems to go right. I was just thinking and in the entire time I have owned this car, I have never once driven it working right. Something has always been wrong with it. Thanks everyone.

I dd mine .. sometimes things break because well they are old .

and no boost at aLL? its not boosting even a little?

if the place that did your work is not a rotary shop they may not have routed the hoses correctly and it may be hte reason why you arent't getting it to work right

From those pictures I can’t spot anything wrong and I used to have one of those intakes. Besides the hoses are just connected to a box with nothing in it other than two KN filters. What makes you think that something is not connected right?

Carmax? Unless they give you what a private seller would offer then talk about another kick in the nuts. Again to me it just seems that you are taking the most expensive route.

Honestly dude this car is not for you. FD’s always have something wrong with them as there is always an annoyance going on with them. It is what it is… From vacuum leaks to pillow bushings, in other words from the front of the car to the rear there is always something that gnaws at your sanity lol. Yet this is the most rewarding car I have ever driven. I’ve driven quite a few cars and nothing comes close to this overall experience that this one provides. Not the elise, not a 160K turbo, not an M3, just nothing… So again it is what it is… Just look at DJDino sig “ Deranged ex-Stripper GF: 93 FD

You seem to just have a simple issue. Take it to a rotary shop, get it fixed and then sell it to a private party. Seriously don’t drive it around enjoying it once it’s sorted out because something else will happen, it always does.

You should look into A C5 Z06. Not very expensive, good looking car, plenty of mechanics, and most importantly not plagued with a plethora of constant issues.

Good luck
