Is there anyone around my area that can help me take a look at my car?
Is there anyone around my area that can help me take a look at my car?
I am in the Bay Area. SF, Daly City, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, Pacifica area or a bit further up to San Jose. Please let me know because I can't seem to find out the problem to my idle/stalling issues. Thanks in advance.
Not sure why people think they're helping by saying the first thing you should do is "take it to a shop/someone who knows how to work on cars." That doesn't really help, and the car's owner probably already thought of that.
bkenchan,
I've had a couple idle problems with my FD in the past, and fortunately they were always something minor.
Without knowing the details or severity of your car's idle issues, I can offer a couple suggestions.
Try adjusting idle adjustment screw with a flathead screwdriver. The adjustment pot is located under the throttle body.
You also want to make sure there's a good seal between the intake pipe and the throttle body. In my experience, the stock thin rubber ring seal does a poor job sealing those two pieces, and a vacuum leak there will cause the idle to jump and drop as the ecu tries to manage an inconsistent vacuum signal. You can intuitively tell that that tiny rubber ring isn't going to do a great job sealing under boost.
So I ending up making my own gasket:
1-Use a piece of thin rubber sheet (<2mm thick from OSH) to ensure that you'll still have plenty of thread to tighten everything together. For my GReddy elbow, I only needed a 6" x 6" piece.
2-Remove the intake elbow and trace its outline on the rubber sheet, cut out the middle, then drill holes for the threads.
I've done this twice to eliminate elbow-TB leaks. My idle no longer jumps, and I consistently hold 14.5 psi with no idle problems.
New plugs and fresh oil will also help smooth out the idle, but only a small amount.
Other things to check:
loose silicone couplers (been there)
leaking intercooler (replaced that)
If anything, you'll eliminate these basic areas of potential leaks.

Sorry for leaving out info. I just thought I could just meet up with someone to look it over, but I guess I'll post more info. My car is an FD. It idles at around 1k rpm. The car would stall out when I come to a stop with it in gear while applying the clutch pedal. If I put it in neutral and come to a stop, the rpms would drop but then it would not stall. Only when it is in gear when I am applying the clutch it would stall. Reverse is same thing. This happen after a rebuild from Ben. We had looked into the problem when he still had time but since he was moving to LV at the time he didn't have much time.
We checked the the vacuum lines but didn't find anything and we adjusted the idle. We didn't have time to look at other stuff. I'll try to look into the leaks at the elbow to see what's up.

No the clutch doesn't sound like the issue here.
bkenchan,
My old Mazda reman would do the same thing you described, so I know exactly what you're talking about. I was fairly certain it was my bad oil seals. My new motor initially would decel stall too, but that all stopped when I made the elbow-TB gasket.
This guy had a similar problem to yours: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...49#post9986049

Being incorrect would not be a first for me, did you catch he said only when in gear and while in nuetral the issue didn't exit? But heck you have a FD as well so perhaps's it is in fact a simliar issue
well bkenchan best of luck getting it squared away in a timing manner

Thanks for the quick replies! I'm going to try the elbow TB thing first. If I still have trouble, I'll post again on here. If not you guys will know that its all fixed.
13x,
Ain't no thang, bro, we were all new at one point, and I'm still learning too.
You just have to be careful who to listen to though. This whole forum is full of ppl with thousands of posts of just misinfo, profanity and bs.
If only the mods would ban those guys for habitually wasting the free bandwidth with misleading "advice"....

I was new a long long time ago way way before my son got his FB 7 years ago. lol It's all good thou, vaccuum leak is a very viable possability and should be explored any time you see me post in the thread like I will only give suggestions for low cost checking procedures, I'd hate for someone to spend a bunch of money and not fix their issue
Yup. We are all new.
I actually thought it was something with vacuum or something leaking but didn't go into diagnosing stuff yet.
I just bought that rubber sheet and will be making the gasket thing within the next few days. I always wondered why the seal between elbow TB meeting was so poor. Hopefully that is the problem. I already replaced my oil, plugs and high flow cat.

I have no idea. Maybe because I messed around with the idle screws and made it higher? It used to stall too even in neutral. Don't know if that's why. . . I'm very confused myself. Anyway I'll try the gasket thing since it was less than a dollar. 64 cents to be exact.
Got the gasket thing in and it still has same problem so I don't think it was that. I just ran tests on the ISC valve and the MAP sensor. Wasn't sure if those were the problem but they tested out good. Now I gotta think of other possibilities. Any other help would be nice.
Nope it didn't and I'm looking of solutions now. I'm going to go over almost everything for vacuum leaks. Maybe I'll find something. Wonder what could cause it to stall when stopping in gear and not in neutral.
At this point you might try adjusting the dashpot, which has a part in regulating the idle when the revs drop.
I'm not exactly describing its functionality precisely, but it 3:30am, and I just got home from studying.
Go to Search and type "dashpot, " and you'll find a number of threads with cases similar to what you're experiencing.
