You are dead wrong in assuming cops don't know anything about cars. Certainly not all do as is apparent with the "cam gears" nitwit who pulled over the poor thread starter. The ***** who pulled me over rattled off and pointed out every visible mod to the tee, even took pictures of them with his cell phone. In no time there were 3 squad cars with six cops and the ***** who pulled me over (for loud exhaust) was pointing things out to them like it was some kind of seminar. They couldn't have found a better car for a lesson.
I was impressed to tell you the truth.
btw, the fine is originally $130 for VC-27156b (air pollution control device required), not $440. Mine went up to $440.25 after I plead not guilty and lost. This is in San Mateo County however.
He may actually have a case to get it dismissed even if the cop shows up. Just get the cop to state "modified cam gears" or something untrue and then show there is no such thing, especially in a rotary and that would negate his argument for writing the ticket in the first place. Worth a try at least....

How about you buy a metallic substrate cat converter ( https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/working-custom-metallic-substrate-cat-fd-425779/ ), install an intake filter (because your screen was probably causing you to LOSE power anyways), and just pass smog? I love fast cars as much as the next guy, but driving behind a catless car really sucks. With modern technology, you can pass smog and be fast.

its worth a try. i was supposed to take my car to a referee too but i didnt. jus got the printout online and took it to court
good luck
the cam gear note was my main point, it's obvious not all cops know about cars. i still am fairly positive the ticket can be written off, maybe yours was not a fix it ticket and his is.
and our cars need a lot more than just a smog pump to pass california smog.

id weld 2 brand new cats from Jegs and make a pipe to connect to the exhaust slap the air pump on it place the egr just to pass visual and you should be good oh and remove anything visible thats not legal anything beyond that they should be puzzled cuz its a "Rotary"

His was not a fix-it-ticket. Either he is full of **** or the people in court had no idea what they were dealing with and he got very lucky. It happens.
These tickets are treated like moving violations without the points on your record, not fix-it-tickets.
If you get pulled over for speeding you can't promise to slow down after getting the ticket and then have the fine reduced to $10.

This guy was indeed a *****, I think it was just his nature.
Tampering with smog crap is not a fix-it-ticket but my buddy who got popped by a LA County Sheriff just paid the $400 fine and he didnt even go to court. Thats a FB with 13-B street port, IDA and NOS.

Wow there are alot of posts since yesterday and thank you for all the info. Now I guess I will try to fight it and hopefully he won't show and if he does I'll just pay the fine right? This really sucks.
So in addition to breaking federal emissions laws, you guys are making your cars loud and flashy. How can you act surprised when a cop pulls you over and busts you? You might as well paint a big bulls-eye on your hood and do burnouts in the parking lot of a donut store.

and why is making your car look different than when it rolled off the delivery truck something that should be illegal?
if that's the case then these ***** driving SUVs with bling bling wheels and exhaust should also be ticketed for making their trucks loud and flashy.

Of course it is not illegal to modify your car's exterior as long as you keep in within the limits of the law. But when you modify the sound of your exhaust and throw on those BOV's, don't come on here and whine when you are pulled over for modified smog equipment.
I've been ticketed more than anybody else on this forum but everyone of them was for something that I did to the car. I can't pass the blame to the "greedy" or "*****" cops for just doing their jobs.

my point was it sounds like he came off like it is our fault for wanting to modify the cars at all, a lot of people modify their cars, most do it legally, some illegally and of course the ones who do it illegally have no room to complain when they get popped for it. there is just too much stereotyping out there though.
i won't be complaining because i know the risks.
