Unhappy Smog Ref In CA, how to get around it?

Alright guys now I've searched the forums but have not fond a good answer so I decided to post. Now I was driving home from Granada Hills and was pulled over for having a loud exhaust (Apexi GT Spec + 3' downpipe replacing cat). Cop talked to me about probable cause and told me to pop my hood. Now I have a ported 87 Jspec block with Jspec S5 manifolds and turbo with a Microtech LT8 without any emissions or intake plumbing for the turbo (just a screen on the turbo). The cop wrote that I have turbo modifications because of my Blitz BOV and said it sounded like I had modified camgears. So now I have to get my car Somgged by a state ref and I got the fine in the mail for $444. I was wondering if I sell my car to a friend do I still have to pay the fine when I go to court or will it be written off. Now theres no way I can pass smog, there is just too much done so please let me know any information that you have on the topic. Please no off topic posts I really need to figure this out.

got any out of state hommies that you can "move in with" to get out of state plates?! AZ has like 5 year tags!!!! Also your insurance rates will drop. I dought you will get out of the fine... CA is hurtin' for $$$. I drove around with Colarado Plates in LA for 4 years without too much grief. Got pulled over twice and acted like I just got it in CA. Got let go everytime. Hope I helped out.

wow that is some deep ****....if you sell you car to a friend or another person i believe that you dont have to pay for the fine....but im not really sure...this is a pretty heavy stuff....not just an ordinary ticket....

to save your car you just gonna have to sell it to somebody and sign a off-road use only car....if you dont do this i think they gonna confiscate your car because for sure it wont pass smog, then make you pay the fine and THEN make you go to court......plus suspended licences then insurance gets infomed...and so on and so fort........A LOT OF BULLSHIT....comes next....

so hurry and either part out your car or sell it as a whole......
if the car is sold as a whole it can never be registered as street legal because its gonna have a record.....

Unfortunately, yes, you will have to pay the fine. Not only will the judge not let you off, but the DMV will not transfer the title until you pay the fine and get the car passed by the state ref. Sorry.

well i believe you have to fix the problems and pass the state referee inspection to not have to pay the fine. if you sell the car you would have to pay the fine, if you register the car out of state you would have to pay the fine.

only course of action is to find the smog equipment you need to get it legal again and pass the inspection or pay the fine and then either make it a track car, sell it or register it out of state or take your chances of hoping not to get pulled over again.

Isnt there a loop hole in the smog/ref rules that states if you spend over X amount of money trying to make your car pass smog/ref and still fail that you will be given immunity? I could have swore I read something on the boards regarding this before through a legitimate source (dmv or other website).

that only applies to smog legal cars not modified cars tagged for visual inspections.

Yep, you are fooked by the Socialist Republik of Kalifornia. Your only recourse is to register out-of-state for a temp fix or go bone-stock on emissions hardware.

invest in a haynes manual and be friends with your local pick and pull yards and local 7 owners.

i always keep my emissions equipment on the shelf and i always do my mods with things like this in mind.

There is one way out - if the car is stolen before the court date. Other than that, pay the $450. Don't even dream of telling the court the car has been stolen without a police report. $450 is cheap compared to going down that road. As an aside, what were you planning on doing come registration/smog time?

Switch plates and dash vin #'s with a smog legal Seven. If you are worried about the door sticker you can make one on your computer or remove it altogether and claim the car was repainted. Put something like a sticker or relocate a part over the existing stamped vin # on the firewall and pray they do not look.
Not sure of the consequences if they find out....

btw, there is no way you will not have to pay the fine unless you plead not guilty and the cop does not show up for the court date in which case I beleive the entire thing is dismissed or at least the fine.

that is usually the way it works yeah. basically it is a fix it ticket, after the ticket is signed off by the referee it is just a small paperwork fee of $10 or $20 not the original $440. pay the $440 and it should be cleared.

It is only illegal if you get caught...kind of like removing your smog equipment in the first place.

I had to deal with this nightmare myself but I got it taken care of. It is NOT a fix it ticket.

You play you pay.
Good luck nonetheless.

so you're saying some idiot pulls you over who knows nothing about cars and points out something looking suspicious and writes you a ticket for $440 for it?

i highly doubt it...

'Aftermarket cam gears...' , that's a good one.

How about you buy a metallic substrate cat converter ( https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/working-custom-metallic-substrate-cat-fd-425779/ ), install an intake filter (because your screen was probably causing you to LOSE power anyways), and just pass smog? I love fast cars as much as the next guy, but driving behind a catless car really sucks. With modern technology, you can pass smog and be fast.
