Called this morning to schedule a motor mount install..

Spoke to Jeff, told him I have the parts and just need him to install it.

He puts me on hold for 5 minutes while he 'looks into it'...comes back on the phone saying he has to drop the subframe, reseal the oil pan, and that its a pretty involved job, probably cant finish it in a day, and will cost me around $1,000.


Called lucky 7 and scheduled for the weekend after this one, 1.5hr labor @ 120$

Yeah the quote from Lucky 7 is probably just R&R the motor mounts and that's it.

Jeff is a good guy. He's been doing this a long time and i'm sure he quoted you the other stuff because he probably doesn't you complaining that your oil pan is leaking after he installed new mounts.

If you think it's so easy, you should do it yourself.

 

Lucky7 installed my banzai oil pan brace, which was 500$ labor with (obvious) resealing. would have done the motor mounts at the same time if I had them.

I just, I mean....1k for a motormount install, that seems reasonable to you guys?

Not doubting jeff's skill or anything, but that just seems extremely pricey.

Quality of work: Rotary Power USA = Lucky 7 (though I feel Rotary Power pays a bit more attention to detail)

Well I spent 80$ on my motor mount install @Lucky7 (less than they quoted), so saved about 920$. Also it was done in about an hour.

And not a drop of oil leaking....

I'm sure he does good work, but I cannot justify spending over 12x the price haha.

 

as everyone mentioned the FD pans leak oil notoriously, so they were trying to avoid the most likely outcome of doing the $1000 job for $125(after the customer comes back and whines about oil all over their driveway after the repairs).

popping the mounts out and replacing them are easy, the chances your pan may leak in the future are a bit less with the pan brace installed. in any event i feel like you're unjustifiedly bashing them for being cautious about doing the job correctly.

even $80 to install the mounts could be considered quite high, since it realistically is a 15 minute job.

 

1000$ seems ridiculous.

And nothing in this thread has made it seem otherwise.
I'm surprised you all think that is a reasonable price to pay for a motor mount job.

 

motor mount and oil pan reseal, not sure why you keep eliminating that last and more important piece of info. maybe you could have convinced them to do it without resealing the pan, maybe not.

tell ya what though, the dealership would do the same as they would. why? because it's the proper way to replace mounts on an FD. i'd probably give the option of doing it without, but tie it with a strong warning and a bit of "if it leaks, you're paying to do it twice and then some" speech.

 

Not eliminating either of those pieces of info, as stated in my post above(#4), I paid 500$ for my pan brace install which included the re-sealing (and dropping the subframe, and yada yada), which would have included motor mounts if I had them at the time.

SO I still don't see why 1000$ is okay.
Perhaps from a shop that hasn't done the job many times, that would open up a manual and skim through the instructions, and conclude 1000$ , which seems to be exactly the case at rotary power, considering how long I was on hold while I heard pages being flipped in the background.
I just didn't expect that from a shop that specializes in rotarys and has much love on the forum.
I'd atleast expect to be in the same *ballpark* as Lucky7.

Unless, of course, rotary power charges 160$/hr in labor, then it makes sense.

It's most likely the cost of rent. LA is pretty expensive compared to Duarte.
