the rotary truths and myths

alright guys, let's make a thread that has a purpose. LOL

name the rumors, myths, whatever you have and state the truth about the rotary.
i know a lot depends on many factors, but just to spread the word to those who don't know about the whole idea.

i guess anyone can answer each other's questions or what not.

here's one... "i heard that rotary engines always blow."

is this true?

please, i know how all the west folks (especially SoCal) like to postwhore, but let's keep it to a minimum.

this thread is just to educate those who are curious. thanks.

i heard, that you dont even have to change the oil, but simply change your filter and add oil. for the reason being that rotaries burn oil any ways.?!

"it's kinda like a 2-cycle motor".

Yes, a 2-cycle that is in reality a 4-cycle.

"I heard you can rev those to 10,000 rpms"

You can rev any car to 10,000 rpms. That does not mean it's good for it.

"i heard those blow up/blow apex seals/etc"

Mine was blown when I got it. I drove it with bad oil control rings for about 30,000 miles (hard miles at that. i delivered pizza's in the mountains) getting 17/25 mpg. I've seen other cars blow motors and not be able to run at all with about 40,000 less miles.

One that I heard the other night from a guy at the Gas station that I have never heard.

You have to set the timing on the engine while doing 55mph, LOL!

Not sure if this counts as a myth:

" So I heard the Rotary needs to be rebuilt every 15k"

This sound's recockulous considering FC owners dont really have a ton of "rebuild" type cash to afford such a luxury....

stop hating guys.

i just made a thread just to show a curious mind about the rotary engine.

i know all motors blow, but the question is that are they really that easy?

i can't say until i blow my motor... got it rebuilt 4000 miles ago.

One thing is true, the rotary engine requires quite a bit more maintenance and care over a regular piston engine.

Yeah they won LE MANS 24hours, but they were using some ceramic seals and they last pretty long on well tuned engines,(they only cost about 1k per rotor).

by the way they smell and they blow up easy stock or moded.Owners can't afford rotaries after the 2nd or 3rd blowup.

Mine lasted to 222k and Ricky has 350k and still running strong. Anyone else has a well cared for rotary that is high original miles?

"How many 'rebuilds' for your FD?"

Despite the reliability issues with my old FD, there's always a special place in my heart for it.....the broken side HAHAHAHHAHA.
