Question Rotary Power USA, Encinitas, CA - any good??

Hi everybody..

I think I'm posting in the right area? I'm looking to possibly buy an FD and ran into one that just had a fresh rebuild done by: Rotary Power USA in Encinitas, CA. Can anybody give me a shout out as to whether they're a reputable rotary shop? I know everybody wants a solid rebuild, but I feel I'm a little more in need than many, due to being both disabled & a few hours from any reputable shop. (I'm on the east coast, so the RX-7 I'm looking at in CA would be a long distance purchase) Any information is appreciated!! (and the faster the better, as she's on a lot out there)

Oh, I know, but I'm in West Virginia and have been keeping my eyes open for some time. (this one's a make-offer with a decent buy-it-now as well) It's hard to find anything over here that's interesting & without rust hiding somewhere, lol, not to mention RX's. I've got another oddball requirement that it has to be automatic. I know, automatics blow, but I'm disabled. Have a whole thread on that if anybody wants to pipe up over there . I just happened to find this particular FD on Ebay with 4 days left, the other day. Looks pretty clean and just had a fresh rebuild from Rotary Power USA in Encinitas, CA. Thanks for the input - anybody know this particular shop??

I've never heard of them... and Encinitas is part of San Diego. Rotary Power in Gardena is another story. Good shop from what I hear.

Got a link?

Naa, don't have a link, but am writing asking for one.. I threw a lowball offer and got turned down, thought I knew I would be, haha. Asked if they could get a sound clip and/or video of it being started & idling but they said they had no idea how to do something that. Will report back about a link.

They said it WAS Rotary Power in Gardena that did the work, and are emailing me the invoices. So by what Kerebrus says, they're a great shop. Anybody else agree? I may start a new thread, since the title on this one's wrong now. What about the black leather/suede seats on tan carpet, was this a factory option on a black '93? Thanks again!

The engine in my FD was rebuilt by Jeff at rotary power, no problems so far, went to his shop a few times for various things, he's a really cool guy. He's been in the rotary business + same location for 25 years or something like that, I figured that says something about the quality of his work haha. Last time i stopped by he was working on a 4 rotor rx8.

Thanks for the info man. Somthin potentially fishy's goin on with the RX in question.. it was originally listed as buy-it for 11 grand. then relisted as 10 grand. (make offer function) I made a rediculously low offer of 4k, just to get my name on their list. It never sold and I'm being offered it for 4k?!?!! I dunno what to do. Looks /carfax clean, Jeff rebuilt it 20k ago in Dec, turbos included. I'm tempted to buy it and even if it needs another rebuild before long....... Any opinions anybody?

PS - I'm gonna post this in all my RX-7 pondering threads, as I need thoughts ASAP!

I've been in contact with the seller for the last few hours and will allegedly recieve the car, SHIPPED, for $4000 total. The title will come via certified mail. I will have 10 days to inspect the car and decide if it is what I agreed upon. If it is not, I am supposedly allowed to return the car at their expense. I NEVER have this kind of luck, but it looks like I'm gonna give it a shot. I will be sending payment tomorrow morning via MoneyGram. Wish me luck!!!

AGREED!!!!!!!!

You do this and your fall into category of "A fool and his money"!!!

Much better idea, spend the money and fly out to check it out. If all good, then drive it home for a nice road trip.

The car is definitely on a lot in Costa Mesa, as I've spoken in depth with the dealer where it's located. What I've been wondering all along, since I got this 2nd chance offer is who the hell I've been talking to. Thanks everybody for putting the HALT on anything happening just yet. My plan was to wait for the dealer to open and talk to somebody who actually works there, asking about this guy/the price etc. In the meantime I'll email him direct that I'll be having somebody local check out the car. Any other suggestions?

yeah no **** the car is prolly on the lot.

Dont be a dumb ***. What if i sent you an email to rent a house for $600/month. And i said, send me the cash and i will send you the House keys. The house is physically there. you can have someone go inspect it.

Basically this is what the guy is doing to you. walk away. Or you can give me the $4k and get the same results.

I appreciate most of the replies here, though you sir, are not House - you are a jackass. As I said, (before you piped up), my plan was to call the dealer and see if this guy worked there etc, BEFORE I sent money anywhere. Excuse me for getting a little excited, but I've actually seen this type situation pay off. (when I knew something was up was when he said shipping was included) My buddy's boss threw a rediculously low offer on a newer Range Rover. The winning bidder failed to make payment, and buddy's boss took ownership for about $5k on a 2nd chance. (it was a '00 something with 41k on the clock) To everybody else here, (other than GOOFYROTOR), I apologize for letting this guy fire me up, though I feel like **** today and he had nothing to contribute.

For the record, I've been in touch with the dealer and both usernames involved in this scam have been reported. They were Jimmie Fowler and susan.308646

Yep, the dealership had no clue who this joker was, apologized that they'd managed to use their dealerships name/page, and reported them for me. The FD in question infact sold to somebody for $8,000. I actually offered 6k at one point, but retracted it when I realized the thing may have bad compression.. The dealer never did get me the compression test I requested. They quoted $150, which I rejected, so they said they'd see about a cheaper price, but never got back to me.

Whenever someone is willing to do something, where you yourself would be saying "Hell No !" (As the Seller)
Like what if I don't like the car, could I return it... Things have to be done in person, for which there would be no cause for returning, it and a pink slip must be present...

This is a great example on how things can go sideways quickly... especially on E-Bay.
Always have someone local check things out for you ! A lot of us are glad to help a potential fellow rotary owner for little to nothing... (Not all of us of course) But for most it's not a big deal to check out a car at a local (st)dealership.

Yeah, I almost put up a thread asking if anybody was willing to go check it out, but never got around to it as it was looking more and more like one I would pass on, and I didn't want to waste anybodies time. The Miata.net community is the same way. It's too bad there're losers everywhere, like this DJDINO joker though. If a mod happens to run into this post, could you please delete his?
