My Willow Springs track day - tips, experince, bads.
I am hooked on my RX7.....
I had to say that.. cause i love my car so much on the way it handles.
My girlfriend surprised me with this being my birthday present. Company she organized with is Speed Ventures.
Best lap time 1:48.
Not bad since this was my 1st day @ a track ever..
Brakes - Porterfield and powerslot rotors i had no fade @ all and bearly any brake dust. Avg laps per session 7
Tires. I bought Duplops SP 8000 since i had figured out that it may have been a track day from some of the suttle questions she asked me is the past few weeks.

How are your tires on your RX7?
Is your car in good running condition?
These are the only tires i could source for the size i needed. 205/55/16
On a friday @ 4pm when the track day was on saturday.
My old Bridgestones RE730 are great and lasted very very well.
I wanted to get the Bridgestone RE750's.
I do not recommend the Dunlops since they wear really quickly and feel mushy and do not grip as well as i expected.
(have to go will complete tonight)

Well the bad side.
Second session went well did the whooe session and best time was a 1:52
Came off the track and then shutdown the car and did not let it run a bit.
Went to the download talk session and then someone comes in saying that my car is blowing out coolant.
I wait till end and then ge check..
Pop the hood and thank god it was only the overflow tank... but it was boiling...
Start the engine let it run for a while and then turn it off. Watched the temp gauge like a hawk..
Then topped up coolant once cool and bled the system. with idling and rad cap off.
Went in to town to get oil since i was a but low.
Got some oild and car went well.
3rd session
Went on.. lap time kept getting better and better . and So did my lines.
6th lap was the best lap.
Then......
See water spray on window. I think it is the guy in the 05 Miata in front of me washing his windscreen.. This in corner 2 doing 80mph... then 3rd comes up and my coolant buzzer goes off...
I look @ my temp gauge and it is pegged... @ the top.. I let way off and drift in to the pits. even turned car off for a bit with out locking the well. ...
Come in and pop the hood...
The radiator filler neck had cracked. and a fine steam was coming out.
Pour water over the engine and radiator to cool everything off as quick as posiable.
once everthings cools i start to investigate and see how bad it is...
Not that bad.. tried calling local dealer in palm dale/lancaster nope sorry spcial order. tried 5 other auto part stores and 1 other special aprts store.. nothing...
Called Jeff @ Rotorary Power in Gardena and get answering machine.. Call my borther to go round there and see if anybody was there and nobody was home...
Start thinking about repairs and what to do...
Thought about clamps and pushing the crack closed to just be able to seal the system to e able to limp home.
Took the neck off and started walking around the pits and got a general conesus of others ideas.
Finallly got some radiator hose and cut down it and wrapped the crack and clamped down the hose to seal it.
filled the system with almost 1 and half gallons. alot lot i thought...
Bled it and let it idle a little with out getting hot to check for leaks..
Packed up and waited for about 30 min on club house and then hit the road @ 4:40pm.
Filled up with 100 Octane and took it very easy comming home to west hollywood.
kept it under 3500rpm most of the way and below 5000rpm on the heavy up hills.
@ most 1 psi boost.
Milage was excellent... almost still a full tank.
I made it home 85 miles. and no rise in temp.. and all well.
Well this is what i expect from a car that is puched with palstic part that are heat cycled for 17 years.
The temp @ the track was about 100F @ 10am so about 110F i think.
Really extreem..
i bought a fluiddyne that night.... 415 shipped.

1:48 is a great time for first weekend and street tires!
That radiator will really help. I'd also reccomend ducting to radiator and pluggin all gaps behind grille there so air can only go thru rad/oil cooler. I used self expanding foam and galvanized steel. That dropped my water + oil temps by 10*F.
Do you have an oil temp gauge? I'd really reccomend one. + I always overfill the oil by 1 quart before hitting track - helps keep oil pickup tube immersed. Royal Purple alone dropped oil temps by 10*F.

The sealing of the radiator duct i am going to do..
I have a Greddy FMIC infront though. so may be a little more tricky.
as for oil temp gauge no.. i do not have 1.
would i just use the filter pedistal adapter and plug in there?
Do you have the gauge in engine bay or inside?

Yes, the filter pedistal adaptor is all that is needed for oil temp, and i'd also do oil pressure. Mechanical gauges only, Autometer Ultralite are great.
Definately put the gauge in the dash.
Never needed Evans, but some people love that stuff. I use distilled water + water wetter + a quart of coolant for rust and freeze prevention.
It can be tough to get a FMIC car to cool properly, it passes warmer air thru the radiator.
How much boost u got? I saw a 2nd gen Eclipse spit it's coolant out after shutdown, guy had 31psi of boost and stock cooling system!!!!!
Hey MrV, I was there this weekend as well. I was driving the silver Evo that came up behind you during the mishap at the beginning of the omega during the second session.
I was really impressed by how well you were running during the 2nd and 3rd session. Had to wave you by a couple times. Made me kind of miss my FC. Was an incredibly fun day though.

i am running 15psi..
did some logging with my LM1 wide band that has the LMA-2 (RPM Converter.) with 4 of 0-5volt inputs to log.
I have the TPS,RPM and boost logged with the O2 reading never dropped below 10.5AFR.
Will post log if requested.. All of your can down load the software for free @ http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/support.php
I have +-290HP
Kaneto was it your 1st time @ the track?
