Moving to Monterey, Cali questions about emissions
Ok so I just graduated Basic training for the air force and I'm moving to Monterey, CA in 2 days. I'll be going to school at the Defense Language Institute at Presidio.
I'm going to be at that school for about a year and a half or so and I'd really like to get my FC shipped out there. So i have a lot of questions about how emissions laws work there.
So here's the details:
My car is straight piped with an open dump. It is loud and it doesn't put out anything clean.
The car will stay registered in Ohio since that is the state I claim.
I heard emissions testing is only done every 2 years but I didn't find any definite info on that as I've only had today to use the internet in the last 9 weeks. Would the fact that i am not going to be there for a full 2 years play in to that at all?
Would I even have to get it tested since the car isn't registered in Cali?
And what are noise emissions laws like?
Any info will be appreciated.

You don't need to change your plates, or get it smogged here. If you are in the military, like you said, you claim the state you're from, and won't have to deal with CA smog laws.
If you decide to register the car here, you'll have to get it smogged. Yes, smog is good for 2 years.
Monterey is full of old people that are retired, so having a loud exhaust is going to get you pulled over plenty of times. I'd say never drive in "Carmel", it's a beautiful quiet town, so they will hate you there too.
Girls that go to Chapman are boring, good luck.
I'm sure you still have to deal with other regulations like CA db level for exhaust. No more than 95 decibels. You'll probably want to go back to stock.
We get pulled over for a lot of other dumb stuff, that I'm sure a show of the military ID card will get you by just fine, but be prepaird to deal with getting pulled over for: no front plate, and modified exhaust.
You're not to far from the Bay, so you'll be able to find some good shops. Cruise highway 1. Like I said a lot of people retire there, so you know its a beautiful place.

Thats really good news, thanks. I was hoping Cali wouldnt have a front plate law, i got pulled over a lot in Ohio for that.
I'm going to have to figure out a way to quiet down my exhaust, if theres a lot of shops around there i'll just try and get 2 resonators put on.
I'm really looking forward to being in Cali, the import scene in Ohio was really mediocre.
On a second note, does any one know any reliable shipping companies i could use to ship the car?

I've never been pulled over for no front plate, or even had a cop mention it. The plate won't be a biggie.
But if you're planning on driving through Carmel village with an open exhaust, you better be in something like a '64 GTO...and I ain't talking 'bout no Pontiac.

Front plate is a much bigger issue in the urban areas, where they like to put the red-light/speed cameras. Especially around PRSM (People's Republic of Santa Monica), Beverly Hills, Centry City, etc. Can't speak to the Bay; I'm almost never up there in my cars.
Of my last three cars (80 SA, 91 Camaro, 03 Z), the only time I've ever had the front plate on any was when I took the -7 for it's most-recent smog check (more for the appearance of compliance, if you get me).
The Z, I've never even drilled the mounting holes for the front plate. Never once hassled for it.
The uberloud exhaust is, however, just asking for a chance to have to pull your socks up.

I just found out i would have to get smog tested to get a sticker to park and drive the car on base, so what i'm going to do is hopefully find a garage or a shop or maybe even a person who lives near Presidio of Monterey who will let me keep my car there.
So if anyone knows of any garages that do storage or anyone lives near the base with an extra spot in the driveway, let me know.

I'd offer my "drive-way", but your FC wouldn't make it on our private road. LOL... you'll have fun in Monterey. I wish I could go to school in DLI. Or better yet, Ft. Ord becomes an active duty base.

That's cool about the autox in Marina I'll have to check it out.
Also i was wondering if anyone knew of any good shops around the Monterey area where i could get a resonator or two welded up.
And of course I'd like to know where the local meets are if anyone has any info on that, my car wont be here for about a month but head starts are good.
