The noise police measure any sound emanating from your car. I think we’re all in agreement that the typical uncorked rotary backfire is quite unpleasant. Should this unpleasantness be recorded by referee’s sound equipment, you sir, will be screwed.

Hmmmm. I was unaware of that. Thanks for clearing that up. You see, I work with a smog referee out in the Antelope Valley, and the way we do it is: get the test rpm for the specific car ( each car has a different rpm for the test ), set the dB meter 20 inches away from the tip of the exhaust at a 45 degree angle, one person holds the rpms at the test rpm, and the other person freezes the reading once they are signaled to. If the dB level is below a max of 96.5 dB then the car passes. If it doesn't pass then we take 2 more readings. If it still doesn't pass the the customer has to do whatever they need to do to quiet it down. The referee site that I work at doesn't charge for the noise inspection though. All of this is for a ticket for an exhaust that is too loud. Not for just having a modified exhaust. I think we might be getting two different type of tickets mixed up.

As long as your car doesn't backfire while being held at the test rpm then you should be fine.

I lost count at 28 times for getting pulled over. Not bad for only 9 years of driving.

I've been ticketed 3 times in one day. Each one made me drive faster for some reason until I wrecked my car later later that night.

On my ticket the cop put 110db+ The funny thing is he wasn't too far off

I was 110db at idle. When measured from 3 feet away at a 45degree angle. I decided just to pay the ticket, because I was paranoid about how the test was conducted, and did not want to get in trouble for anything else.

haha nice. My last ticket I got pulled over for going 121 mph entering the freeway. The cop was like... how the hell did you go that fast and youre not even on the freeway yet. he gave me a long lecture and wrote me down for 80. My other ticket before that was when I just got out of class and heading to work. I was driving normal on the freeway and some white camaro cut me off almost hitting me. I downshifted caught up and cut him off and kept on going. Next thing you know... that white camaro was a cop!! lol!! He pulled me over and give me a ticket for speeding, wreckless driving, and unsafe lane change. i got owned

Those CHP Camaro's are sneaky.
I was rolling along 280 in the fastlane once and saw a white car coming up pretty fast. Made sure it wasn't a b&w sedan and wasn't picking up any radar so I dropped it a gear and got into it a little and moved over a lane to let him get up next to me. Was doing about 90 when the car pulls up next to me when I heard "Slow down" coming from the pa, the CHP's pa. He then proceeded to speed off.
I about crapped my pants.

Haha, man these are some good stories. ;D

So where abouts around here can I go get this dB level testing done? If it's free I say why the hell not... I do not get backfire unless the gas is completely let off.

And jesuscookies, what exhaust was that at 110? And once you pay it they can still give you another one can't they? That's why I don't want to pay it... they'll be giving me them weekly if they hear I'm dishing out the money haha...

It was a topspeed titanium. Once you pay they can still ticket you. I subsequently switched out the exhaust. Again, the only reason I did not go to test, was that I was paranoid of what else they would find.

I have a Decibel meter if you want to use it to check your piece of crap.

Pierce College in the valley. The other options that I know of are Oxnard and Palmdale/Lancaster. These are all smog check referee stations. The refs have dB meters and perform the test. I think you have to call 800-622-7733 to schedule an appointment.

the above is to be used for exhaust only. Not to test how loud you can be while getting something from the rear.

I don't have the address for the Oxnard station. When I had go, I called the 800 number to find what the options were. That's when they told me I could go to Oxnard.

I once got pulled over for pacing traffic. Apparently, my car looked like it was going faster than everyone else.....in traffic.
