Las Vegas owners, talk to me
Got offered a job running a company almost too good to be true in Vegas... wondering what it is like there before I go any further.

Well the money is a big issue. Mazdamark/ Icemark Rotary makes decent income, but if I decided to take this job, then I would be able to retire entirely in 5 years while still in my 40's.
But it is in the middle of the desert.
But it is in the middle of the desert.
Mark, I've been there a couple of times but I was always on the strip. I'll ask my sister about it. She lived there for a while. If the job offer is that good I don't see how you could pass it up. But would this mean the end of Mazdamark??

we hated it for 2 years
no weather
no where to go once out of the city limit
all plastic people
no rotarys
worthless mazda dealers still that way
any way after 8 years we are cool with it
have had 2 kids born here
its all they know
no we make a living unlike the start
we enjoy
the lake some and the river as well
we love the mountians
4 wheeling is fun
we rally cars and thats fun too
really more fun
in the winter most years theres a ton of snot 60 miles from the strip we go sledding and snowboarding
clubbing all night is obvious
the favorite it to play craps till 2 or 3
then take the winnings and blow it on strippers
then at 8 or 9 am go have breakfast and go home
it is hott ttttt 115 most years
you learn to stay out of the sun and heat
shop at night
work in the shop an night with the swamp cooler running full you can get down to 70
at night
in the day our shop gets to 100 on hot days
but your neighbors are doing the same
traffic is getting bad
am commute 30 minutes for 8 miles on a good day at 8 am
60 minutes on bad days
15 minutes at midnight
the strip to my home
and
we love it now
and dont know what we would do if we moved away
we want to open a shop to the public
we want to stay here and continue to invest in this area
any way be cool

And you know, I really like Northern CA... It is the most relaxed living that I have ever been in (and I have lived and worked all over the world - just not LV). I like the people, I like the weather, the only things I don't like is that it is hard to see my Chargers football, the ocean is cold, and the freeways suck (they just don't get freeways in Northern CA like they do in So Cal). But maybe living in Vegas is not as bad as I am imagining. I used to be there for work at least once or twice a year so its one of those- hmm well lets see.
At this point it is all theorectical. They have not made a firm offer... just dangled a big carrot, and I have not accepted anything more than, "Okay lets talk". I fly to LA/Irvine a week from Monday and I'll be there until Thursday night, and then to Vegas a week after that. I'll know more at that point.

Been there...done that...
I hope you talking about a job either working for a casino or for the fledgling (video) gaming industry.
Working for anything else is a POS, and you're catering for the casinos.
The weather sux, unless you can handle the desert heat.
Infrastructure sux, so if you got kids, preprare for frustration.
Nice and "expensive" is NW (Summerlin) and SW (Green Valley).
I heard the real estate took a **** after I left (in 2002), so housing might not be so bad.
The city cannot keep up with the expansion though, and that causes all kinds of infrastructure headaches (sewer, water, public schools) like I mentioned above.
If you got any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

vegas is not for everyone
and people come and go
but its not as bad as the above post everywhere
some sections are fine
some are growing
6000 people added a month
they have to live some where
and yes vegas infrastructure is very reactive and some what late
but vegas is a gold mine
i mean really
there are so many people with cash
spending stupid amounts of money here
own the business not work for it
but there are plenty of 100k a year gigs here
but we need 65 at least to live and have fun
family of 4 new car and home
and schools are good and bad
but all school is the same
you only get out what you put in to it
any way be cool
it finaly snowed and we are going out in the dirt car tonight
if you make it here
let me know and ill comp you in some shows

oh yea dude
thats what is driving the market here
folks from California sell a small home and come here and buy a large lot and a big home
the market is cold now
stable pricing
and a large amount of new and used homea for sale
average selling time is over 40 days
2 years ago it was 10

As a bay area transplant myself, here are my likes/dislikes:
Like: Cheap real eastate compared to SF.
Dislike: Everyone is moving here, causing housing prices to rise... They may have peaked in 05... we'll see if they go up again this summer.
Like: Good weather October to May
Dislike: ****-hot weather May to October (but it IS a dry heat... I much prefer Vegas summer to a Texas summer)
Like: nearly everything open 24-7
Dislike: Shift changes cause bad traffic at odd times on the I15.
Like: I've been traveling at least 2 days a week out of town for the past year, visiting places all over the US... During the winter, there is no better place to be, with the exception of maybe the LA Area.
Dislike: I15 and I95 - to be avoided at all costs.
Like: McCarran Airport. Free WiFi, fairly fast security check if you go at the right time (print boarding pass at home, don't check luggage, wear easy slip off shoes, don't fly out on a Monday morning)
Dislike: Urban areas are ugly, some sub-urban areas are getting ugly. Bay area is much more beautiful, with all the trees, and greenery... General residential and suburban architecutre is better in the Bay area, and IMHO, better weather year round.
Dislike: the common person on the street... the average bay-area person seems better read, mroe intelligent than the average las vegan, and friendlier
I have family in the bay area, so I can escape up there for a long weekend (SWA has one-way tix from LAS-OAK for less than $90, sometimes they have specials $45 1 way)... If you do move to vegas, make it a point of escaping out of town at least once a month in July-August
As for places to live in the US, for me Vegas is second only to the bay area, with Austin, TX third, LA/SoCal 4th, Seattle 5th.

That's what Reno and Tahoe are for.

One hour plane ride via SWA, and you're in heaven for snow!

Every other year, almost all of Vegas gets a light dusting - even the Strip.
Don't worry about the snow...
Worry about the RAIN!
Cause of the desert environment, rainwater runoff is NASTY.
Low lying areas get quickly swamped, and people are still stupid enough to try and cross or drive through this stuff.

For some odd reason Summerlin consistently gets a light dusting every year.
