Interested? RX7 meet at Miramar USMC Air Museum
Hey Everyone,
One of my classmates is the Curator for the Flying Leathernecks Aviation Museum on MCAS Miramar. I was telling them about the meet we had over the weekend and he asked me if we'd be interested in having the meet at the Museum... like actually parking cars next to their planes. (With the caveat that we don't hit any of the planes, you break it you buy it, and a F4 Phantom costs a lot!)
How cool would that be?
They've also got a parking area and he said we could probably do a BBQ if we wanted. I told him we could probably get 20 people pretty easily, so I'd like to find out how many people would be interested. We could either make it one of the regular monthly meets or something like that. (It's a stone's throw from the Miramar Speed Circuit, btw.)
It's a free admission museum, so I don't imagine they'd charge anything, but I imagine a donation would be recommended.
This is just to gauge interest and figure out any concerns. No thoughts on a date yet. Let me know if you guys have any questions or concerns and I can pass them along.

As long as it's about 2-3 weeks from now. I'm pulling my UIM and TB today to get ceramichromed and polished, respectively. BTW, a photo op with the planes is a freakin' awesome idea!!!

Great thought, Tom!
I've always wanted to check it out, but always forgot unless I was passing by heading someplace else.
A donation sounds reasonable since it takes quite a few resources to keep a museum like this going.

PICTURES. My FC with the F4 Phantom in the parking lot.
Vote or post or something so I know how many to expect, so I can pass along the info and figure out if this is gonna happen or not.

Back to the top. I'm only seeing 8 people being interested. Is that it? Post or vote or something, so I can get a count.
Also I talked to Curator guy, and yes, we can park next to all the airplanes... he's the Curator.

Something To Keep In Mind
Something to keep in mind...
If we do this on a weekend (which I imagine we would elect), we will not be the only people there. There will be other people there touring the museum, so I think parking next to "any" airplane might be difficult. Parking next to the F-4 (one Tom parked next to), or the F-9 (I think that is what it was) or the A-4 would not be an issue since they are all in a long parking lot across the street from the museum.
I think it sounds like a good idea and we should start planning to make it happen...

agreed. also getting on the base means you either have to have tags/id which some of you do or you need to have valid drivers license insurance and car registration

thats easy to get on the base...I work for the dod so that's not a problem for me...but for the others...yeah valid information on the car and driver is needed in order to get on base...and also a heads up at the main gate letting them know who and how many people are going to the museum for the bbq meet...

Easy Getting On Base
Getting on base is not an issue in this case. They actually open a portion of the fence on Miramar road for access to the museum. They close off a couple of fences in other areas to limit access to only the museum and its parking lots. So, access is very easy on the weekends...

Alright that's what I needed. I won't see Curator Guy till next week (spring break this week) and I'll start talking to him about times.
Maybe May's 1st Saturday meet?
Worse case scenario: We park in the parking lot and hang out with the airplanes. He told me they just got a little gazebo for the picnic area.
Also, does anyone have a portable grill we can use? If so, we'll start working on some potluck arrangements.
And yes, you don't need to get on base, there's a special gate between the North and West Miramar gates to access the museum. (Picture)

Start the thread for who's going and who's bringing what after the april 5th meet...so people don't get confused...at least you have an idea of what things look like...and believe the turn out will be pretty good....let the meet fall on the first saturday of the month in may...start the thread right after the april 5th meet...going to give people enough time to plan for it, and also allow the list to grow....good stuff count me in and a few others...
