If Bikes can be loud, why can't we?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I have always heard the motorcycles don't have limits on the decibles for their exhausts (if they do, I have heard some INSANELY loud ones that still pass). The reason for that is that, since they are small, its a safety precautions so that people hear them if they don't see them. I guarantee that EVERY member on this forum has been not noticed by a car changing lanes at least once.

My point is that we are susceptible to the same fate as motorcycles, yet they have an extra precaution while we do not.

Yes they do have rules as far as decibels go (I believe they are similar to cars) but simply aren't enforced because they offer up a way to be aware of them being near.

On the flip side, I sure as hell hope you're joking by implying we are equally at risk in comparison to a motor cycle or anything close to it...

i ride a harley as well as a 7 well not anymore i sold my 7. bikes have the same db limit as cars and it is a saftey thing if someone can hear my loud *** pipes there going to look for me even if they cant see me. at least i do. and trust me ive been hit by a car in one of my 7s in the past and been hit by a maxima when i was riding my bike. difference being i was just pissed my car got hit. and when i got hit on my bike which was way slower of a hit. just some guy making a turn i got thrown across the street by bike landed on me and i couldnt walk for almost 2 weeks. but if it makes you feel better it is now illigal to change pipes on motorcycles not sure what year it started but it is recent. there also trying to pass a law requiring cats on motorcycles.

Much easier to die on a bike. The bones in your body become the crumple zones you would normally enjoy while driving in an automobile.

still no excuse for some bikes to be so ******* obnoxious, same goes for extremely loud cars. bikes get more leniency for the reasons mentioned, even though many times i see examples where it is just *****-ish. my Ducati with Forza exhaust is loud but it is not obnoxious.

I agree no need for either to be obnoxious, when i hear loud *** cars i think its ridiculous, you can have a performance exhaust without shattering ear drums, I feel the same towards bikes.

I'm happy the way it is. Last thing I want to do is merge into a motorcycle that sounds like a Prius.

I have a Yam FZ1 that I ride daily. It hs a A/M pipe that has been modded. So it's a little louder then it should be. But it's still funny. Because when I start my bike, it sits for a min, Then I take off, with out reving. So as to warm up the bike as I go. This is Cali after all.
There are 4 other guys, 2 Harlys, a Suz SV (V twin) and a GSXR. They all let there bikes sit or 15 + min to warm up. Sometimes evin them while sitting. Then Get on them. Rev repetetively as they take off.

Then one day the lady next door asked me, how come your bike is so much quieter then all the others. I laughed as I put my hands on my hips and turned my head to the side striking a supper hero stance and said. It's because I know how to use my *****.

She about fell over laughing as she noded in agreement.

the obnoxious factor comes from the fact alot of these idiots on bikes wind them out, often rt past my house in a residential neigborhood, super loud and it pisses me off along the same lines as the douches with the systyms in thier car that only produce bass and shake your windows 3 miles ahead of thier arrival,if the cops around here ever decided to crack down on this ****,and i wish they would, they would prob. have to order twice as many ticketbooks

Way to sound like old, snobby elitests. For those that will come out saying, "you can't hear a motorcycle if it's behind you, regardless of exhaust", there's a few on here that can attest otherwise so save it.

My exhaust is a Force racing exhaust, 1 of 20 ever made, it is "obnoxiously loud". Whether you like it or not doesn't change the fact you know I'm there.

Your car is built for you, my bike is built for me. I couldn't care less if other people don't like it; they're not riding it, I am. If I get a ticket, whatever, that's my burden and not yours.

So, your point is what, exactly? That's it's OK to be obnoxious so long as you did it on purpose, & spent a lot of money in the process?

You're kind of proving the 'old, snobby elitists' point, while being an elitist yourself, flaunting your "1 of 20 ever made" exhaust system n' all.

1. elitist

1. A person who believes that they are superior to others (and thus deserve favored status) because of their intellect, social status, wealth, or other factors.
Self-contradict, much?

My point of having 1 in 20 is saying it's rare, so I'm not gonna let it sit on a shelf instead I'm gonna use it; that's not elitest.

I also didn't say it's ok to be obnoxious. I even said "if I get a ticket, whatever". That's acknowledging it's not ok and I'll deal with whatever consequences the law deals upon me; so far, none.

You want people to conform to your opinion of what an exhaust should sound like, but I bet you defend your car's exhaust. Demand tolerance, yet are intolerant of others.

Saying "I don't care what you think" is indifferent, not elitest. Here, lmgtfy. Call me arrogant, I don't care...however nowhere did I say I was superior to anyone else.

My bike is my bike, I will build it for me and no one else. Your car is your car to do with as you please. If you want to put a V12 in your RX and stick it on top of 44's, whatever. I don't care for the style, but I'm not gonna tell you that you shouldn't do it based on my opinion. It's your car, your money and your time, do with it as you please.

Do you get my point yet?

If you were truly indifferent & didn't care what I or anyone else thinks, you wouldn't be trying to defend your position, would you? For that matter, someone who is truly indifferent would never express an opinion on the first place.

You're also engaging in a strawman argument - I never said anything about wanting anyone to conform to anything, and you're wrong in your assumption that I'm out to 'defend my exhaust system' or any other such red herring. Nor did I 'demand tolerance' of anything from you or anyone else.

I just asked you what your point was, because it wasn't clear from your post, and pointed out that you were contradicting yourself.

You're awfully defensive, for someone who's supposedly so indifferent.

Oh, and your argument that someone cannot be 'elitest' (?) simply because they use something that is rare makes no sense at all.

"If you've got it, flaunt it" is a highly elitist statement, but you can't 'flaunt' most things without using them.

Or maybe you were using the second definition of 'indifferent?'

2. Neither good nor bad; mediocre: "attempts to distinguish between good, bad, and indifferent work".

That's probably because you haven't explained the point of the "old, snobby elitists" or the "1 of 20" comments as being anything other than puffery & braggadocio on your part, but whatever.

Enjoy your indifference!

This is why I love my RB exhaust. Nice sound but never too loud.

Motorcycles aren't allowed to loud anymore.
96DB limit is enforced now.
Bill was signed before Arnold left office.

I know of at least one person who had their bike impounded, and was even fined when leaving impound after picking up their bike for loud exhaust.

There are even zones set up where police have DB meters, kind of like DUI check points.

It's getting to the point where anything that isn't a hybrid - isn't allowed. :/
