Holiday Information Request - Lake Tahoe
I am looking at skiing holidays, and a friend recommended Lake Tahoe. Is this a good place to go skiing/boarding?
We will be mostly intermediate levels.
Thanks

Indeed, are you looking for sumer water skiing or winter snow skiing? I have heard that Lake Tahoe is good for water skiing, but I know for a fact that it is one of the best locations for snow skiing/boarding in the U.S.

Sounds like Snow, since he said boarding, but I guess he could have meant wake boarding.
Yes there are probably 15 different ski resorts in the area, with every level from world-class resorts to mom and pop resorts. Here is a link for some: http://www.laketahoeskiing.com/
The majority of the runs at most resorts are intermediate or advanced, but there at least 25% of most resorts are beginner level if you are planning on learning.
I normally ski and board at Sugar bowl ( usually get season passes there), with occasional trips to Homewood and Donner Ski Ranch (Donner has $10 mid-week lift tickets- just gotta call in sick a day or two from work just for that) and every now an then a weekend at Squaw Valley (1960 Winter Olympics site).
A good friend went to Switzerland and Italy for skiing this past year, and was disappointed overall when comparing to what she boards on here in Northern California.
Usually the best time of the year is after mid- January, when the arctic storms start blowing in fresh snow every couple of days. Best skiing of the year this year (05-06 season) was in March and I was still boarding in late April this year and there were several resorts still open in May.
Last year (04-05 season) the snow was at record levels and I was skiing in November through May. This year I busted a rib snowboarding so I ended up taking off about 4 weeks on the end of febuary through the beginning of march.
If you want nightlife there are also casinos on the Nevada side of lake as well as food from every part of the world all over. Reno is also about 30 minutes away and is like a mini Las Vegas.

If you stay in the Reno/Sparks area casinos you can save alot of money and are anywhere from 30-45 minutes away from all the skiing. Very nice rooms can be had for around $50 mid week and most of the casinos have room and ski packages. If you stay at Lake Tahoe proper, you will pay alot more for alot less. I recomend Mount Rose Ski Resort for good intermediate and begining boarding. Good prices and a nice facility. Lake Tahoe sits on the California/Nevada border and offers quite alot. The winter olympics were held there in the early 1960s. Its best after January 1st as winter sometimes gets a late start. Check out www.peppermillreno.com/packages/ski_packages/
For $59 you get a room and a full days ski/lift ticket and transportation to the ski resort!
