grrrr CALI REGISTRATION BS~!

Sooooo I brought my project rx-7 down here when i moved from WA. Its still a WA state car and would like to keep it that way, Im close to dropping a motor in and would love to be able to "test drive" the car up and down the street and down the freeway "one exit"....MY Driver liscence is still WA and am trying to keep everything that way.

So i Sold my car, figured i need a truck to haul a trailer with for long distance drives when i finish my project car, seeing how cops are going to love it and i dont wanna see it get squished. Bought a truck at an auction. Tore the truck down to bare bones and threw it back together again. SWEET~! RIGHT~!

Ok so, Heres the dilemma.

Im pretty sure it would be unwise to have one car registered in WA and the other in CA. I dont even know if they would make me get a CA drivers liscence in order to get the car in my name here in CA. Which totally defeats the purpose. and on the other hand. If i happen to get pulled over in the rx-7 with WA plates, and somewhere in their system it shows i have a CA car as well. Im pretty sure i wont be driving my rx-7 home ....

I sent my title to my dad in WA to have him go to the dmv and get WA plates and title for me. they are saying that the car has to have a CA state title first in order to do that. Well The auction didnt give me a "ca state title" they gave me a paper showing it was on a lien when they got their hands on it and sold it to me. SOOOO i got myself in quiet the pickle it seems.

Sooo any ideas?

I'd like to have both cars in teh same state. but i dont see CA giving me a title for my rx-7 cuz its sure as hell not gonna pass any inspections or smog. And i want to have a title , especially if i ever sell the damn thing. Anyone know what my options are? Any help would be appreciated.

im not sure about coming from another state.. but one way to title transfer without smog is to register it non operational, since its not running. As for the license, you're just going to have to get a cali license.. it"ll save you alot of hassle

gettin a cali liscence kinda defeats the purpose of trying to keep it all out of state. NON-op wouldnt let me test drive it down the road , would it do anything to the title like salvage it or brand it. If i were to try and sell it later?

Just take all the paper work you got from the auction to the DMV and get a CA title for it. Then send that title to your dad.

its up to you what you want to do, get a cali license or not. If you have the vehicle under non op, you can do the title transfer into California, and no it wont make the title salvaged, it only temporary. You can also get temporary stickers or papers to test drive the car, but only in one month increments i believe.

Yep; title does not equal registration. Title just shows legal ownership. Tell them that you are selling it out of state (don't mention it's to your dad) and you just need to apply for a new title. Takes them two or three weeks to process it & mail you the title, once you've proved ownership.

Just don't get caught driving it on the street in the meantime.

Im just thinking if i have 2 cars registered in two different states and i get pulled over and the cop sees that, then my "im on vacation" story isnt a very good story anymore. Last thing i wanna see is my car gettin crushed in front of me. I'd much rather have all my paperwork as solid and bulletproof as it can be.

I think that having two licenses from different states is illegal but if it isn't, then you may be able to go that route-- I'm probably pretty wrong but it's worth looking in to.

Cali does expect you to have your vehicles registered here when you take up legal residence. Driving your "Dad's" RX7 probably (no guarantees) wouldn't get you busted the first time you got stopped... but those computers, they have long memories. Second time, they'd likely catch on.

Register the car under a trust worthy friends name who already has their records in Cali. Then have him sell it to you. You may pay extra taxes (nothing a little smart form filling will solve), and it's a couple extra steps, but at least in the end you'll keep it out of state. The DMV will require a place of residence that exists in their system in order to acquire a CA title.

I never heard of crushing the FC just b'cuz of the different states. Crushed car is only when your racing with or against on illegal street or public streets. Please don't race, save FCs. Anyway, You should have them done asap before getting pulled over, this is part of REF TICKETS if you get pulled over. Other thing, I dont know if it works but try this. Go to DMV and tell them you need another license plate bcuz it was stolen. Take it out before head to DMV, dont bring the old one with you, trashed it somewhere that is not near you. If cop stops you, tell him or her that your on your way to DMV to get another plates. If even better call the police to have them come over your house or someplace(recommenced) but make sure there is no camera in the plaza. Trashed the plate far as you can at least about a mile or throw in the river or something where no one can see or by cameras. Hope you get your Cali license plate from there...sorry about my grammers if none of them make sense.

I had a good friend that had a Oregon registered 4Runner for years living in Cali. He worked here and just registered it up in Oregon. He also didn't have to pay parking tickets because they didn't report it back to his home state DMV.

Tell your pops to register it at tge DMV on California Ave (ironically) in west seattle. Those ladys will register anything. Register it in WA non-running. In WA non-running titles are no different and aren't even reported as non-running. Huge flaw. I drove my turbo FB like that for years. The only requirement is to have your pops tell them its parked on the street in front of his house and you need tabs so it doesn't get towed. As long as his house isn't in Seattle city limits he can do that, and it's all good. Seattle law no car can be parked on the road for more than 24 hours. Even if it's in front of your house. It legaly has to move once a day. I got in a huge fight with a cop over this when I lived on Alki. F'ing ******* neighbor... LOL

UHHH....they arent going to crush my car because of different states. They would crush it because its a track car with illegal mods driving down public roads.

Hyper thanks for the info buddy. The problem I am gonna have is that im going to have to go to WA state in person to register it. Atleast at the local DMV they wont let my pops register it for me, and from what he explained either way i need to get a title for it before i can even do so myself.

My pops lives out of seattle city limits in oly area so i dunno if that would work. If u got a number i can call ya at bud that would help ALOT~! U still running ur WA plates out here now?

Yup. I've even been paced by CHP going 85 on I5 and didn't get pulled over. Veterans plates FTW! He shouldn't have an issue in olympia. Go there register it yourself and call it good. Better do it soon it'll be cold and rainy there again in 4 weeks. LOL

When I got my Cali License from Illinois, I got to keep my Illinois License, I don't know if they have the jurisdiction to take another state's license, unless you willingly give it up, or they make it a requirement, another way to do that is to say this is your first license, and take the driving test and the written one, and that way they issue a brand new license... I guess the idea is to have two licenses, that way you can be Joe Blow, from Wa. and Jo Blow from Ca. just make sure you don't pull the wrong license in the wrong car
