If you get pulled over for that, pull out the tape measure make off the correct distance and hand the Db meter to the cop and ask him to tell you what it says.
Sounds like a good idea but I'm sure it will **** off the officer and possibly make him go over your car with a fine toothed comb. I thought about this idea before but I truly doubt that the officer would look at the results and say "I was wrong about your exhaust. I'm sorry for the trouble. Have a nice day."

They get you either way. Me, I'd go to court JUST to rub it in the cops face for giving such a undeserving ticket and wasting your and the courts time in front of the judge. Trust me, that cop will be seeing that judge again, and again, and again as part of his job.
Going to court and winning my case will cost the court a hell of a lot more money in the end than what my ticket fee costs. Maybe my case will pile up with other cases like this and eventually something will be done. Somehow I doubt it. But if everyone just pays the fine and brushes it off, nothing will be done about it.

THAT's the spirit.

You're right. It costs the system a "hell of a lot more money". Judges HATE dealing with frivilous tickets and cops that write them. Go to court and ask the judge to ask the cop why your, the judge, and the courts time has been wasted. Because it's the cops job, that cop will be in front of that judge again and again. Do that and I doubt that cop will think twice before doing it again as he will have zero credibility in that judges eyes forever if he does.

Fu, I kinda knew you would make a comment.

But, I was standing in court in a similar situation where the judge absolutley undressed the cop while I was standing there. Words I will never forget the red faced judge asking the cop "Why is this man standing here?" Cop wouldn't say a word, and wouldn't even look at me as I tried to start a "friendly" conversation with him as he walked to his motorcycle and drove off.

I also made a follow up phone call to his police chief to advise him of the situation, and he promised he would "discusss" the situation with him.

It was great.

There are good cops, and there are bad cops. Some aren't even worthy of being a security guard at some shopping mall.

i got a ticket for loud exhuast too but i had a single exhaust at the time. Anyway i put a second tip on it and a resinator and took it to get tested. they tested the car and the lowest it was putting out was 102-103 db. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i can do to put in with in the limits? ive already spent a decent amount of money and don't no if ill be able to afford a whole new exhaust system.

Cops in Sac have the DB meter in the bike/squad car and they will test it right there on the spot sometimes.

They give different tickets thought sometimes its a modified exhaust, or its just too loud, i had a bike cop use it one time, with my buddies car he stuck it in the engine bay and gave him a ticket for too loud. for me he stuck it ALL the way into my tail pipe and it was 96 DB... 1DB over and i got a ticket for it.. when mentioned that i thought it was supposed to be 18 inches away from the exhaust, he asked if i was calling him a liar and if i wanted more tickets.. he was a roseville cop, so its not surprising hes a dick.

I got a "modified exhaust" ticket in my V6 Amigo back in 2002. I shoved a Car Chemistry exhaust insert into the tailpipe and that did the trick. Quited the truck and the CHP.

Bought on summitracing.com

102 is quite high, might need to splice in a few dynomax resonaters.

you willmost likely get a ticket for that.

cop pulled me over a while back and told me that any form of modified exhaust is considered illegal, regardless of how loud it is.

he said its considered tampering with "smog equipment" or something along those lines.

bs they all say that the vehicle code state that we may do anything to our exhaust from the cat back as long as it does not reach above 95db. i looked into it after i got mine. i talked with a few cops around my area and they said the general rule is if you can hear it from 50ft away then its too loud. oh and for those of you about to go to the ref the rev out point is something like 4800 rpms. freaking rediculous. this is what it is up here. luckily the college i went to to have it done one of the ref's students had a tII so he held it at at around 3000 for me haha and i passed.
